Default Does this build work?

Hey All,

This is my first attempt at a build. I have helped a couple friends with their builds but this is my first shot.

1. Thermaltake ArmorPlus(Armor+) VH6000BWS Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

2. XFX Radeon HD 5870 850MHZ 1GB GDDR5 4.8GHZ 2XDVI HDMI Display Port DIRECTX11 PCI-E Video Card

3. Intel Core i7 920 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 4.8GT/S

4. ASUS P6T SE X58 ATX LGA1366 DDR3 LGA1366 3PCI-E16 PCI-E1 2PCI CrossFire SATA2 Motherboard

5. Corsair XMS3 TR3X6G1600C9 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 9-9-9-24 Core i7 Memory Kit

6. Corsair TX950W 950W CMPSU-950TX 12V 78A 24PIN ATX Active PFC 140M Fan Power Supply

7. AuzenTech X-PLOSION Cinema 7.1 Sound Card DTS Connect Dolby Digital Live Sound Card PCI 32BIT

8. Western Digital WD1001FALS Caviar Black 1TB SATA2 7200RPM 4.2MS 32MB 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive OEM

9. 2 - DVD burners from old PC. 24 speed.

10. Windows 7 64 bit

Thoughts? Any thing I should be concerned with in terms of power, cooling, or otherwise? Will be primarily a gaming PC, but would also like to use it to stream video to my media center.

Adding a couple notes*

I could potentially overclock...not that I think its extremely necessary right now, but would be nice to have the option. I am a proud canadian on the East Coast and intend on getting all my parts via a local supplier (Greenlyph - Halifax) I did bench mark all prices on NCIX and Newegg - but like to keep it local if possible. Budget isn't a huge concern but would like to try and stay under 2k.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, all your parts are compatible. The 950w is overkill for this build, a 650 or 750 would do fine. And use the saved money to get a new DVD burner. It'd be a shame to put used parts into a spanky new build like that. I'd also look at an aftermarket HSF, the stock cooler sucks on the 920. My load temps without OC'ing hit 79 degrees with the intel cooler.

I wondered about the cooling someone suggested the CoolIT Sure? Icrontic CoolIT announces sealed liquid cooling units for new ATI cards I think you guys did a review on it to. Is there a diff HS you'd recommend?

Also, I went with the 950w thinking that down the road i'd like to run dual 5870's (a year or 2 from now) and boost to 12GB of RAM - Is the 950w still over kill? Could I get away with a 750w?

That Coolit is for the graphics card. Your CPU is probably more important. As for wattage, look here: Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 Review That's a fully loaded i7 with a Boreas cooler pulling 349w. You'd be fine with a 750w and 2 5870's. They appear to use about 180w each.

Well if you're not planning on crossfiring until 1-2 years from now it probably won't be worth it because ATI will have their 6870's out by then haha. And that CoolIT that you linked is for your GPU, whereas SugarJ was talking about the Heat Sink Fan that comes with your CPU (i7 920) and it ain't it that great. You may want to look into getting an aftermarket HSF, especially if planning to overclock.

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up on the PS. Are there a couple of recommended HSF's that I should look at. That's one area my knowledge is quite limited in.

Cooler Master 212 Is a great little cooler for cheap.

Here is AkG's review on it.
