+1 for a intel build. an i5 can be found for the same as a 965. Also noctua fans aren't that great for a heatsink you could find much better for cheaper. You want fans with good static pressure which I made the mistake of not getting on my TRUE black with cruddy slipstreams.

I KNEW I was forgetting a mfg'er. +1 for migs78 & Evga. Asus/GB/EVGA...any of those three make quality boards. :)

Thank you all so very much for posting!

This is exactly the kind of reasoned, transparent recommendation process I was hoping for -- I can't describe my gratitude eloquently enough.

While some of you favor certain parts over others, I can see patterns here already. Certain pieces for the build have become "obvious" choices now, which were unknown to me before.

As it happens, the MMORPG I have been anticipating most just entered closed beta -- now, I will be able to occupy my tester's slot properly, with a good rig. Thank you all again. This old rig has served me surprisingly well over the years, but it's time to put it out to pasture.

I'll get my order in to NCIX soonest, and let these forums know how it all pans out.

This is a good website. Not one person insulted me, or sneered "noob!". My fellow Canadians, always polite!

Woah.... yucky bright colours. Why buy a 775 rig with 2 5870's!?!?!? I know it takes a lot to bottleneck, but that is pushing it!

Made my first-pass picks -- but haven't ordered yet. How's this looking??

Based on what everyone said, I got the message that the Gigabyte brand mobo was a good idea, but I'm not sure I got precisely the best model. Any thoughts?

Also, I went with the Antec case because I find the LED-light, tricked-out cases to be very distracting while at the keyboard. Any comments?

Thanks again for lending the collective wisdom. Genuine apologies if the formatting is annoying; I feared that if I messed with it too much, I'd only make things worse.

Note: The X-Fi Xtreme audio sound card does not use a true X-Fi sound processor, although it has X-Fi in the title, it uses a processor similar to the older audigy cards.. therefore will not be much of an upgrade over the motherboard's onboard sound. I suggest (if you want to stick with creative) to get the xtreme gamer, as it uses the X-Fi chip and is the next cheapest available in their lineup. It sounds fantastic for the price.

Great choice on the hard drive. If you're only using 1 video card you can get away with a lot less power supply than that, especially using a 40nm video card.

I'm glad you chose the i5 over the AMD build. It should net you a lot more for your money. ... I know it has been mentioned, but just in case don't forget to price match everything (pricebat, pricecanada, shopbot etc). You can really nickel and dime things down, lol. You could also downgrade that PSU somewhat to save a bit if it's an issue. Oh, and watch the Wednesday sales as well as there are always one or two good deals to be had.

I would just suggest you get the Antec CP-850 PSU in this combo (with the P183) for 239.99 and get Windows 7 Home Premium as the special offer that comes with it for 89.99. Together, those 2 offers would make you save nearly 125$.

Of course you get the drawback that the CP-850 won't fit into any case you want. But its a very good PSU that fits in the P183.

I'm not sure if you have a specific reason for the case you chose but if you make a couple changes:

Case:
Antec Nine Hundred Mid Tower Gamer Case 900 ATX 9 Drive Bay No PS Top USB2.0 1394 Audio
On sale for $99.98
Also comes with Windows 7, 64bit for $89.99

Power Supply:
Corsair TX750W 750W ATX 12V 60A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 140MM Fan
On sale for $111.99 or $89.99 after MRI

Should save you in the ballpark of $180 plus tax.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe for the system 750W should be fine and I checked and it appears that a 5870 should fit in the Antec 900 case.

Also, don't forget to price match everything you can (I don't know if you can price-match combo deals though i.e i5 and the ram). On the WD Caviar Black you can save about $20 if you price-match it to bestdirect.ca.

Additionally, depending on your needs (I don't know if you'll need all 1TB of space), but you can save another $30 if you go and price-match a WD Caviar Black 640GB.
