My System Specs

Default First new rig in ages. ~1k budget.

So this old xp2100 machine ain't what she used to be, and I'm looking to step into the modern era with a gaming/multimedia pc.

I've got enough points for free ncix ground shipping so 1 big shipment is the idea unless anyone else does price matching.

Bought
Antec P183 ...................$140
AMD Phenom II x2 550be ..$113
Asus M4A79XTD EVO .......$132 (just realized there's a 10 mir too)

Case was expensive I know, but I've always liked Antec P series, and I'm worth it

WTB
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB DDR3-1600 CL7-7-7-24 ... $100 (pm at newegg.ca)
Corsair TX650 ............................................$70 after 22 mir
WD Caviar Black 640GB ................................$66

1650x1080 monitor?
5850?

For the longest time I was planning on getting a 4870/90, but I don't like the new xfx 4870 coolers that ncix keeps pushing. So now I'm wondering if the 5850 would be overkill considering the cpu/mobo. Gaming will eventually be done at 1650x1080 if I can ever find a monitor at that res that I want. For now, the 19" crt it is.

The cpu is obviously meant to be overclocked with it's low thermals, and I intend on doing so when I get a cooler for it.

On a related note, is there any way to hook up these modern GPU's to a tv that only has s-video/rca/component inputs?

^ I believe my GTX 280's all came with DVI to Component Cable adapters (probably still in the boxes)....I'm sure the newer ones must..

My XFX 4890 has an s-video out as well as a converter from s-video to (I forgot) RBG (I think). Looks like a nice build, but I'd probably buy the cooler now.

The P183 is a very nice case. I would also suggest getting 2 more quiet fans for intake (I got 5 fans installed in mine and I like it)

Been thinking that a little lately after seeing it on sale this week. Still pretty happy, I am coming from an xp2100 after all Grabbed a Sunbeam CCTF heatsink so I expect to OC from the get go.

I pulled the trigger on the rest of the system including windows 7. Could have waited to get a better card I'm sure, but since I'll be sticking with 1280x1024 gaming on my crt for at least a few months, the price was right.

@Kilauea, did you try using the 2 metal clips to mount a fan behind the upper hd cage? I tried putting one of the included Antec fans there and the clips wouldn't grasp it correctly.
