Default Open Season on this build

I've been out of the component scene for a bit...

This is a pretty open post, so I won't be offended if not many answer.

I have this motherboard:
Gigabyte EP45-UD3R Motherboard - Intel P45, Socket 775

I want to play newer games and I'd like my comp to last a while but I don't want to fork out the cash for the latest and greatest. I'm still playing L4d on my 5 1/2 year old Inspiron 8600. I'm looking at about a grand but would love to spend a bit less if possible. I will pick up a monitor in addition. If I can stick to he above board and save some cash, it would be nice.

Browsing a bit I was looking at:

Intel Q9550
GeForce GTX 260 SC
OCZ Titanium 4gb PC9200
2x 1Tb WD for Raid

but some mentioned that I should go with i5 for the same.

I have no idea.

Any help appreciated.

PS. When are the new deals posted at TD and the like?

Decent parts to go with your LGA775 mobo. If you go to an i5, you're looking at new mobo and DDR3, which will cut into your budget big time.

NCIX posts their sale every Wednesday evening about 6:30 PST.

Buy used parts. An 8800GT can be had for as low as $60 at times and performs admirably, especially if you end up with a smaller LCD panel.

Used GTX260 is around the $140 mark.

Pick up a Q6600, there is a great one on the forsale forum here. Cheapest Q6600 $120. Does 3.6GHz It's a sweet deal, imho. I would have gotten it a long time ago if I was in a position to get another farm up.

Pick up some GSKILL RAM, PC6400 would be fine, you won't be going beyond 400 FSB anyway at 3.6ghz.

I won't comment on the HD because that's whatever you want, really.....

Minus the HDs that puts you at around:

Q6600 $120 shipped
4gb Gskill $70
GTX260 $140

= 330

That's what I would do.... If anyone complains about my prices I have bought hardware at those prices, so I'm only giving prices I've actually paid for in the past.

Thanks for all of the recommendations!

I have been super busy so I didn't get around to ordering yet... and the long weekend is upon us.

I will let you know what I get early next week.

Thanks again!

Hey Perineum,

I like your idea. I might as well go the used route for now and pick up something later if I want.

I have some concern about buying the damaged Q6600. Should I be concerned about this?

There is a Q9400 for sale at 165+shipping. Which do you think is better?

I checked out Direct Canada and I can get a Seagate 1 TB for $85, the G.Skill 4gb for $84 and a new GTX 260 OC for $165. Any comments on these?

Anything else you see in the for sale thread that I should be interested in (case, psu)? Anywhere else to look for items for sale (should I be looking at ebay?)

Thanks again,
