i5 or Phenom 2?

Well its my yearly upgrade time and im conflicted to what to get. Ive never owned an intel ever other then my laptops. I mainly game with this machine @ 1900x1200 on a 26" lcd monitor, but i also run Virtual machines for ym classes so the extra grunt would definatly be a plus.

I cant seem to really find a definitive answer on what is the better of the two processors. Phenom 955 (965 isnt worth the markup) vs the i5 750. Now i dont want any douchebaggery coming from the fanboys. Im currently using a phenom 720BE @ 3.6ghz with 4gb of ram on a 790GX chipset. My phenom has been one great chip to me , but its time for a new one now as playing RE5 and darkest of days seems to kill my framerate so its time for the new. I already have an xfx 5870 backordered so gpu isnt a question.

from what I've seen the 955 BE is approximately equal to the Q9550/9650, so i'd go for the i5 if I were you, as its a lot closer to the i7 920.

However, if I were you I'd save some money and just upgrade the CPU to the 955 BE in your current build

Seems like to me you want to save money, go for AMD.

Fanboi DOUCHEBAGGERY? Thats like finding a needle in a hay stack. THIS IS HWC NOT XS.

+1 for I5 for its performances. I5 860/870 is the way of the future.

I tried google already, which lead me to fanboi douchbaggery comment so thanks for the help. I was hoping to get some feedback from someone who has used both ie: jumped from am3 to i5 .

Yeah if money is an issue stick with AMD, as their new AM3 CPU's are all backwards compatible with Socket AM2+ & AM3 sockets are seems all their current CPU's are going that route.

Intel has the heads up on performance, however it's unclear how far socket 1156 will go, i5 750 is pretty nice, with the i7 860 looking pretty damn nice pricewise.

For me, it's very hard to recommend Phenom II with i5 on the scene. I'd go with the i5.

If your discounting the 965 because its not worth the mark-up, I'd say the same for the i5, I'll fully admit the i5 is a superior chip, but your frame rates will still be amazing with a 5870 and a 955, and you wont have to change boards and spend an extra 150-250.

Good point.

I5 does seem to do quite a bit better than the 955/965's. However, you already have the AMD platform so going with the 955 seems like the best option. Plus, you don't have to spend time researching all that P55 jazz, and the money you save can go to a cool video card that will have more impact at that resolution than a CPU.

In keeping with what's been said above - are you sure it's your CPU that's holding you back? It's pretty rare (but not impossible) for that to happen with a quad at 3.6GHz, especially at higher resolutions like yours. Try playing the games with Task Manager open in the background and see if you're maxing any cores out.
