Starting by the begining, can you tell us exactly what your PSU is ?

Then, without thinking about the items for sale(and there are some interesting deals), I am sure an Athlon II X4 would fit in your budget, but it might be useful to see how it compares to a Phenom II X2 for what you intend to do with it.

I believe that once we know what your PSU is, then we can really start suggesting. Also having a budget in mind would be helpful. If it is as cheap as possible, then we will have to deal with that too.

I know this isn't as fun as all the i7 and i5 rigs being put together right now so I appreciate the help.
Tired of those high end builds. It's always just the same high end parts over and over, I have more fun trying to get a certain performance level out of a tighter budget.
I would probably recommend the Athlon IIx4 over any phenom dual, since it's 2 more cores at near same price. Combos are definitely a key area to save money.

I'm not sure about the PSU.
I'll have to take a look later when she'll let me get at it.
I've got a couple offers I'm considering so I may just get a better one.
Budget... definately as cheap as possible (prefer better than dual-core, but will settle if I have to).

I wish it could be a high-end build, but I just can't afford it.
Money is always tight for us and I have to keep the cost down as low as possible.
The original plan was to just add more RAM to the Compaq, but it's lacking in more areas than just memory.
The Celeron 2.7GHz is just getting too old...
HDD is only 40GB...
Geforce 6200 is pretty crappy and getting artifacts...
The motherboard has something fried on it that caused the front USB to stop working...
It's going to die eventually, and I figure it's smarter to try and build a new rig even though it won't be a new high-end machine.

I'd like to go with something like the Athlon II X4 620 if I can get everything cheap enough, but honestly my budget is very low and whatever I put together will be a stretch.
Maybe I'll think about waiting until Christmas and just get her a gig of RAM for now, but that almost seems like a waste of money.

Try to contact aimndtel about his 100$ combo to see if its still available: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...tml#post217581 because if it still is, its pretty nice even tho its not awesome speed. At least, you could start with only spending 100$ and using ur old HDD as well as case(maybe) and PSU.

Doesn't look like I'll be able to use the case (though I'm not sure... it's a Compaq Presario s6010v system).
PSU is 350 maybe 400 watts... I'll have a closer look in a couple hours.
The HDD is only 40GB so I don't even know if it's worth keeping (not sure of specs either).
I'll probably only be able to reuse the fans and dvd drive.

I'm not sure what I'll end up doing yet (besides wish I had more $$$).
Thanks for the help so far... keep the suggestions coming.

Just looking around i came up with this:

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA MA74GM S2
Buy Gigabyte [GA-MA74GM-S2] Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 AMD740G mATX AM2+/AM3 1PCI-EX 2PCI SATA2 RAID VGA Sound GLAN DVI Motherboard
$54.79

Processor - Phenom II X3 720
Newegg.ca - AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor - Processors - Desktops
$138.99

Memory - 4gb Corsair XMS2
Buy CORSAIR [TWIN2X4096-8500C5C] Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X4096-8500C5C 4GB 2X2GB PC2-8500 DDR2-1066 CL5-6-6-18 240PIN Memory Kit
$68.79 - $17 mail in rebate = $52.79

Case - Compucase 6C28B (basically the cheapest case you can buy)
Buy Compucase [6C28B] Compucase 6C28B ATX Case Black 4X5.25 2X3.5 4X.3.5INT W/ Front USB & Audio No PS
$29.10

PSU (if you need it) - Corsair CMPSU-400CX
NCIX.com - Buy Corsair CMPSU-400CX 400CX 400W ATX 12V 30A Power Supply Active PFC 120MM Fan - CMPSU-400CX In Canada.
$50.99 - $11 mail in rebate = $39.99

Graphics Card - Asus Geforce 9600gso 512mb
ASUS GeForce 9600GSO V2 550MHZ 512MB 1.4GHZ DDR3 PCI-E VGA DVI HDMI HDCP Video Card - DirectCanada
$59.88 - $20 mail in rebate = $39.88

Total = $355.54 + shipping and taxes (I listed a whole bunch of places but I'm pretty sure bestdirect always had prices within $5)

If that's too much you could get an Athlon II 240 for $68 at NCIX:
NCIX.com - Buy AMD Athlon II X2 240 Dual Core Processor Socket AM3 2.8GHZ 2MB Cache 65W Retail Box - ADX240OCGQBOX In Canada. and lower the price a little bit.

Good luck!

Edit: Read this: Motherboard ms-6577 m-atx rev. 3.1 - Motherboard Processor & RAM
and this: Compaq Presario s6010v PSU replacement?
So the case should fit the motherboard and psu that i chose. Personally I would at least upgrade the psu to the corsair.

I'm in the Kitchener area right now.

Dyckyj that looks pretty good.
Could I use an Athlon II X4 620 in that mobo?
Would like to go with at least 3 cores, but dual is more my price range

I've been thinking about the AMD 550...
How likely is it that I'll get one that's unlockable and works properly?

Think I know what direction I'm going in...
Not sure if I want to go with an Athlon II X2 240 or scrape up enough for an Athlon II X4 620.
Anyone able to help me make that choice?
