My System Specs

Default AMD build, what cpu?

Hi, I've already ordered or received the following for my new build:
MSI 790FX-GD70
Corsair 850tx psu
4gb DDR3 G.Skill Ripjaw 1600mhz ram
MSI Radeon 4890OC
Seagate 7200.12 1TB Hard Drive
HAF 932 Case
I've been buying from newegg/canada computers.

Now I'm looking for suggestions for the cpu, has to be AM3, so no 940's.
Since the 965 in most bench marks I've seen isn't significantly better than a 955, and actually LOSES to it in some benches, its out of the question, especially since overclocking it resulted in a drop in performance in alot of tests.(refering to overclockersclub.com review).
So the cpu's I'm looking into are the
X2 550 $115.15
X3 720 $148.75
X4 945 $189.00
X4 955 $219.87
The biggest thing I'm looking for are unlocked 550/720 bench marks that I can compare to the 945/955. I want to know even as a quad core, if they stack up to one, and yea I know that its a gamble as to if you can unlock one or not.

X3 720 and try to unlock it. Does your board have whatever the feature is needed for unlocking?

i would definitely go for the x4 955, that cpu has the highest chances of hitting 4ghz.

as for the x3 720, people were only able to get them at 3.2ghz-3.6ghz, maybe i haven't read enough about them tho

If you have a canada computer store near you, you can always check the patch on those x2 550s ;)

go for the 955. If you unlock core on the 720 it will not overclock as high as the 955 so you are better with a real quad with higher OC. Don't forget to get the Hyper 212 to put on it. It's actually the only AMD cooler you can mount in any direction and best bang for the bucks cooler of the years for now.

Ask for more.

I'm gonna say the 550 since unless you run a lot of applications at once, a quad really isn't worth it. You might unlock the 550 to a quad which means 2 extra cores for free, other wise for 100$ less you can overclock a dual to 3.8 or so and save that money for some other upgrade...or conserve, YAY.

Ya I agree with clone 63 you should consider x2 250 as well, but heh if you got the money then go with the x4 955 by all means.

I'm leaning toward the 550 right now, since my funds are running out and I dont wanna wait an extra week for the processor after I get all my other components. I've eliminated the 720 from my list entirely, checked some tests and didn't really like what I saw for overclocking. I hear the stock heatsink for the 550 blows, but I'll wait and buy a v8, true, or IFX-14 in a couple weeks and overclock then. After I've got the hardware all in place I'm gonna start looking into cosmetic mods, fans, 5.25" bay fan controllers/temp readers/card readers.
Also, can you guys list any sites you shop from? I've been using canada computers and newegg so far, but am aware of tigerdirect.ca(bad), directcanada.com(ok, good cpu prices), ncix.com(ok, price match is nice) but if there are any other sites you guys use that are good please let me know.
Thanks for the help thus far.

Just bought the 550, a TRUE black, and another scythe ultra kaze from direct canada. Gonna do the typical heatsink and cpu lapping, push pull on the true etc... while purchasing I noticed a $32 fan and I couldn't believe it... direct canada carries the 250+cfm delta, and I think I'm gonna buy a couple a bit later this year and see how far I can go on air. It's kinda expensive I guess, $64 on 2 fans but I've heard these things have enough air pressure they can lift themselves off the table if facing down!
PS, 2 of those would consume around 84w of power!!!

Oh, and since the true black has a chemical coating on it, is lapping it a bad idea? I'm gonna guess it wont hurt it, and the coating is more for looks.

And would you be able to hear your speakers on max, or just be blown out of the room entirely?
