Help with gaming build

So im looking to upgrade from my 2500 Barton, yea i have been out of the loop:haha: Basically what im looking for is a gaming built around the 2500 Barton of today. I could oc that sucker to speeds of a cpu's twice the price.

I want a sys that will stay strong for over a year if possible. My budget is $1300 and under. I have done some reading and come up with this. Please put any input you may have.

Cpu: AMD Phenom II x4 955
$229.98- From what i have read this is a great price/performance cpuand a good oc.

Mobo:
Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P - Worried about 2 ram slot being obstructed by after market cooler. Will a gaming sys ever need more than 4 gigs of ram?

Ram:
G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK PC2-8500 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-5-15 $67.99
or
G.SKILL F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ PC2-8000 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1000 CL5-5-5-15 $62.99

V/C: XFX Radeon HD 4890 XT 1GB 875MHZ $249.99
- Just going off what others have picked.

Cooler:
Xigmatek HDT-S1283$46.28

Case: ? -
Just something that will fit all the components with some room to spare

P/S:
Corsair TX750W $124.99

Monitor: -
Samsung SyncMaster 2343BWX 23IN $235.08 -

Prices are off NCIX, i know i can pp to get some prices down...

I'D suggest...
PSU - HX 750W instead because it's modular.
Case - Antec 1200
Mobo - ASUS Crosshair III Formula
Ram - G.Skill 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1333

P.S. Where do you live ?

I'd also suggest buying from DirectCanada.com
Order over $300 get free shipping.

If you get the Antec 1200 for a case, I suggest you go with the Antec CP-850 for a PSU. As for the MA790X-UD4P, the 2 RAM slots blocked don't stop you from installing some RAM, it just needs to be installed before the cooler is installed. I got a picture for you to see.

As for the HSF, the one you chose is good, but look at the OCZ Vendetta II or the Coolermaster Hyper 212 and get the cheaper one. The 3 of them are very good performer, pretty close one to another. On these forums, the Coolermaster seems to be prefered as of lately.

Otherwise, it looks like a solid build.

Everything is good and well balanced build but try to got with DDR3, it will not cost much more and you will be future proof. Also try to look at the Coolermaster Hyper 212 for cooler, it can be mount in different direction on AMD socket so you can put the fan infront of the memory and don't lose 2 slot;) For the case HAf 932 is on of the best out there, Full ATX is the way to live IMO.

Awsome! Really appreciate the input. grifter11, i live in Vancouver, gonna look into D.C. thanks.

Kilauea, that h/s is #@!#en huge!! The case is kinda expensive but look like you got more than enough room to play with. Thanks for clearing up the Ram issue

martin_metal_88, Shouldn't i go with a higher speed ram, or will those do me good. Im looking to get a decent oc out of this.

Thanks again guys, please dont hesitate pointing me the right way!

OC will increase your ram speed at all but if you want to be saffer from memory dying after some time and have a massive OC then yes get 1600.
I use this one several time and love it at all.

Hmm looking at my mobo and also with what you guys have with your build i think i'll stick to your original suggestion for ram. Now for gaming would 4gb be enough? Would 6gb be overkill??

martin_metal_88 August 26, 2009 12:48 PM

Plenty enough for now, all game are always made of 32bit software so they wont use more then 3gig of ram. So get a 64Bit os wich will use the 1 gig remaining and you are in business:) 6 Gig will yes be overkill and on a dual channel computer 6gig? lol dual channel is 4 or 8 gig tripple core I7 ( from intel ) are 6gig memory user.
