Default Advice Needed for Budget Minded, Casual Gamer

Hey guys,

On a tight budget but desperately need an upgrade from my E2180 system (with X1650 Pro Graphics card). Only have $450 to spend though...can it be done? I'm not looking to play Crysis or anything that requires a monster rig. Just want something that I can watch HD movies on and play the occasional game at decent settings.

Here is what I have already:

Samsung DVD Burner
500 GB Seagate SATA drive
450W Power Supply (el cheapo...will upgrade if necessary)

Need:

Video Card
Motherboard
CPU
Case

Thanks for all your advice. I've learned a ton from these forums and find it to be one of my favourite resources on the net for tech info!

Just upgrade your video card and you'll be ok- what do you have for memory?

I agree with Babrbarossa, just upgrade the video card. However, if you are using one of those generic power supplies, get a new one before it goes out and possibly take out other hardware with it.

However, if you really want to upgrade, an E5200, Gigabyte G31, Antec300/NZXT Beta, GTS 250/4850 might work too with some oc'n. Should be able to hit 3.0-3.5 with that mobo

Your mileage may vary but some people have even hit 3.8 LINK. Got an E7300 to 3.7 on this very board. As for power supply, a 450W would work or even CC's perpetually on sale OCZ

yeah, just upgrade your video card to something like the HD 4670 or 9600GT if you only want to watch HD video and casual gaming. Those cards are cheap and they have low power consumption.

For sure a change of video card would do well and I certainly would change the PSU. I am a bit maniacal about that but that's one area where I never skimp on quality. You don't need a monster beast of a PSU. A good quality 400-500 watts is better than a cheap 600-700 watts unit. The thing is that a good PSU will be usable for a few builts so it's worth the investment. Depending on what's left you should be able to change your CPU as well. I have read good thing about the Pentium 6300 or maybe as Crossfire2009 suggested a CPU in the 7XXX series might be a possibility. 2 gig of memory should suffice especially if you're using Windows XP. If you go for a change of CPU make sure to consult the motherboard manual to see what CPU it supports and if a bios flash is necessary.

Thanks for the reply, guys. Yesterday I was leaning towards an E5200 setup but I think I have a chance to stretch my dollar a bit more with the X2 7750.

well, do you want to overclock, the E2180 overclock really well, unlike the X2 7750. So I suggest you overclock your CPU instead of buying a new one. It's not much of a upgrade going E2180 to E5200 or 7750.

I agree- the 2180 isn't a bad CPU- you're not going to have much luck overclocking it with the asrock board you have, but perhaps you can snatch up a cheap 775 overclocking board. Get a GPU upgrade, spend $50 on a used decent motherboard, add a decent cooler (perhaps you have one) and overclock the CPU to 3.0GHz and you're set.
