My System Specs

Default Platinum Redux

Just pulled the pin on an AM3 upgrade, and once I was done it dawned on me that the names looked kinda familiar.... :)

Ordered a PhII 720 X3, MSI 790FX-GD70, and a set of OCZ plats.

I cut my OC teeth on a MSI K8N Neo Platinum (AMD S754) which was my first "non-budget" board (I'm looking forward to revisiting the folks over on their support forums to see if they still offer the same friendly advice), was an AMD fan pretty well right from the beginning (started with a K6, and my first fried proc was a 1G T-Bird), and remember my first set of PC4000 OCZ plats (cost me damn near 4 bills IIRC) fondly.

Haven't done quite as much research on this stuff as I probably should have, but I'm more interested in the excitement of playing with a new platform than I am with pure performance. :)

are you gonna unlock that tri core?

wow 4 PCIE slots. i hope your not gonna waste the other 3 slots

that MSI board looks amazingly good, just like the MSI p55 counter part

the good thing about AMD are there cheap prices all FX boards are $200 no need to do research

I started off by looking at the Crosshair III, but couldn't justify the extra $100. We'll see how this goes.

I most certainly am going to see what I can do about unlocking the extra core, and am going to take the OC process slowly on this build. (Start on air, work my way up to water).

As far as the 4 slots goes..... not sure what I'll do with them. I may have to make up some dummy plugs and run some cheap nvidias for folding purposes. :)

I'm really looking forward to this. It's been a couple of years since I had a full slate of unknown components to test limits on. Everything over the last couple of years has been an incremental upgrade where I've already known the limits of most of the kit. That tends to make the OC process fairly predictable.

Heh... the familiar part is that I'm returning to my roots of MSI/AMD/OCZ. :)

As far as where it's all going.... I'm leaning towards dropping it onto my test bed. I'm planning on playing with it under stock cooling / higher end air / and then WC, but that means I'll have to transfer the Q6600 setup into my cosmos S when I pass along the DQ6 / E8400.

Did you try the OC with just the 3 cores enabled to see if that made any difference to OC headroom?

Yeah 3 or 4 cores it isnt stable past 3.5, I tried with the 3 cores but same thing hits a wall and wont be stable past that point. For me stable is 24 prime and folding a few units. Hell @ 3750-3800 it is stable in just about anything but folding. Will play games fine for hours.
It will hit 4g for a 06 run but thats at 1.6v and still folding throws units.

I noticed that you're running PC2-8500, so I'm guessing it's an AM2 board?
