Haven't read too much on the MSI board I picked out other than one review where they blew the VR ccts within 15 minutes of initial OC..... I'm not too concerned, the board was only $160, and I've got VIP over at NCIX for RMA if I have to..... :)

What I'm most interested in is the OC dial on the motherboard (Crosshair III doesn't have it yet). If it doesn't already have it, I'm painting a number 11 on that sucker!!!! :)

Hrmmmmm..... looking at that new coolermaster heatsink, I just might have to pick one up to round off my trip down memory lane.

My first high end air cooler was a Hyper 6+ and it looks like this one might offer the same kind of kickass (that was Maximum PC's rating at the time) performance.

My first AMD motherboard and CPU got deliver today

Those AM3 CPU are a pretty big compared to the lga775 that i used

i guess those dials got you interested eh

MSI's exclusive overclocking technology íVOC Dial

after seeing them at the MSI site, those dials looks pretty interesting, you can change fsb at OS

so what GPU did you pick for that board? gtx 295?

More than likely it'll end up being the 275 which is in my main rig ATM, but once I'm done playing with the platform I'll probably start trying to populate the extra PCIe slots with lower end Nvidia cards for folding.

Got confirmation that the CPU/Mobo have shipped.... waiting for the memory to be transfered from another site.......

Got the motherboard and proc in today, unfortunately the memory didn't ship until this morning so I won't see it until thursday/friday, and I've got a pretty full slate.

Got a 0904EPMW stepping which looks like somebody has had luck unlocking the extra core on so I've got my fingers crossed. Loving the look of the motherboard. MSI Black PCB FTW.

After so long on the S775 platform, it's pretty wierd looking at pins on a proc, and holy unimpressed batman does that stock cooler ever look craptacular!!!! :)

so i looked into the msi 790fx-gd70, it a monster board

i kinda want to ditch the gigabutt board

can you give me more info how you got it for $160? its not usd right

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and the feel of AMD cpu are so different, there almost twice the size of lga775 and i find the pin is WAAAYYYY easier than the intel counter part. and that stock heat sink is so sleek and sexy

Finally got a chance to throw it onto my test bed, and have it up and running at stock settings with stock cooling (damn that's pretty basic looking.... :) ).

Did some quick searching through the bios, and tried setting ACC to on to see if that unlocked the fourth core with no luck. I haven't done much research yet so I'm not convinced I'm doing it right.....

Initial impressions from the hardware install:

- Idle temps are 29c, OCCT load temps (5 minute run) are up around 50c.

- MSI boards still follow their own dual channel format with sticks side-by-side for dual channel rather than the industry standard of one in each bank. At least the colours match now. :)

- Hardware installation was painless, but using the first PCIe slot would block the only PCIe X1 slot, the second slot would have the GPU covering the NB (SB?)heatsink (poor airflow), the third PCIe X16 slot would cover over the digital display, and the last slot can only accept a single slot card. Overall, not a single "perfect" slot to use for a single card setup, but I suppose that's the trade-off for having 4 slots.

- The on-board buttons are great (especially for an open testbed), and as a bonus they've even included an HDD LED. Not only does the LED display show the standard "post" codes, once it's up and running it also displays cpu temps (It's off a degree or two from coretemp so I'm assuming it's coming from the bios as opposed to directly from the cpu).

I'll post more as I go, but so far I'm impressed with the amount of stuff they've crammed onto this board. :)

Have you tried setting acc on,auto, and then shut down discharge the psu, then reboot? I needed to do that on this ha-07.

Yeah I have the same temp led on this ha-07, mine is from the bios.

I thought all the 790 have side-by-side slots for DC? Getting my ascent's in was tight!

Could be, it's been a while since I ran an AMD system. I was just remembering the S939 days when MSI memory standard was opposite to industry standard. Anybody else out there with a different manufacturer's 790 board care to comment on the DC setup for memory on their board?

I'll try the power down / PSU off thingy and see if it makes a difference.

Stock settings (mem set to 1600 7-7-7) super-pi is mid 24s.
