Question Need help upgrading on a budget.

Hi Gents,

I could use your opinions and help. I need to replace my motherboard and cpu. I broke a capacitor off my motherboard and haven't noticed any problems yet but I figure it is the push I need to upgrade anyways.

Since my budget is only about $300-$400 I will only be replacing my motherboard and cpu currently.

Right now I run;

Antec Sonata I
Antec Earthwatt 500w PS
P5B-VM motherboard
Core 2 Duo 2.13 (old 6420)
4 gigs of 667 Kingston DDR2 Value Ram
(I run windows xp home 32bit so it only sees 3.4 or some such)
Sapphire HD 2600XT GPU
Seagate 160G SATA HD

I would like to replace the motherboard and CPU with something AMD. I have never had an AMD before and I would like to try them since they tend to be cheaper than Intel but I am still open to Intel if it is the best way to go for now. I can also scrape some money to replace my RAM if you guys see fit.

My computer is used mostly for light gaming and web surfing. COD4 is my most graphically intensive game right now. I will eventually upgrade my GPU as well but I wanted to start with the motherboard and cpu. I am not a big overclocker. Actually I wouldn't even know where to start. I will browse the latest in HDs. The reason I picked AMD is that the prices on AMD tend to be a lot lower than Intel. The new Phenom cpus have had a lot of amazing press lately so I figured I would try it out.

A couple of additional questions. Will my power supply last me a while? I just had it installed after buying it at Christmas when NCIX put it on sale. Are the Phenom IIs that much better than the Athlons out there? Value to performance wise?

Thanks for all the help guys.

Kris. :help:

The x3 720BE is a good start at $139 + free shipping at newegg.ca then pick out a mobo there or any other etailer that has a good deal. The 720BE is overclock friendly it has an unlocked multi.

Canada Computers - Motherboards > Socket AM2+ : Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 Socket AM2 AMD 770 + SB700 Chipset Dual-Channel DDR2 1200/066Mhz 6x SATA 3Gb/s 7.1- Ch HD Audio Gigabit Lan IEEE1394 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphic Slots ATX. Here's the same mobo with $6.99 shipping. For the price difference I'd stay away from x2 cpu even though the 550 can possibly unlock the other 2 cores but it's not a sure thing. These guys got it too Xpress Canada - Motherboards > Socket AM2+ : Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 Socket AM2 AMD 770 + SB700 Chipset Dual-Channel DDR2 1200/066Mhz 6x SATA 3Gb/s 7.1- Ch HD Audio Gigabit Lan IEEE1394 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphic Slots ATX.

Ps; yes the phenomII even at stock 3ghz (overclocked 3.5ghz at 1.4v and ht 2000mhz all the time)is far better than my x2 6000 clocked to 3.4ghz.

x3 720 $140 free shipping
Ga-ma 770 $80+$6 shipped
$226 + whatever tax.
A WD 640GB 32MB Black would be a nice upgrade to u'r hdd they go for about $78.

Your power supply should last you just fine, unless there's something you're not telling us about it . An Antec EarthWatts can actually deliver 500W for some time, and your computer doesn't even get close to that mark.
I estimate your rig's power consumption at:
95W (non-OC'd CPU) + 25W (mobo) + 15W (hard drives) + 50W (Radeon HD2600) = 185W << 500W

The older Athlon X2s can barely beat your current E6420, especially if you overclock. I'd actually stick with your older CPU (if it still works) rather than invest in an equally outdated Athlon X2. If you're going for more cores, get a Phenom II because the older Phenoms have horrible heat and idle power consumption. So +1 to the suggestion of Phenom II 720.

The Sonata is an ATX case. I just use a mATX because at the time of purchase I needed onboard video.

If I decide to keep the CPU, which motherboard should I look for then? You make a good point about keep a perfectly good CPU. It still runs fine. It would likely wind up in a landfill somewhere. :(

I don't recommend to get the e5200, it's not a upgrade. Keep your CPU and get yourself a good p45 and overclock your CPU.
