Default AMD Build

Building a gaming computer

I plan to order the rest of my parts in the next week I currently have

Corsair TX750
XFX 4890 XT
WD640 GB

I plan to order

1. CM Storm Scout - ~$130
2. Phenom II X3 720BE - ~$160
3. Gigabyte MA790XT AM3 Mobo - ~$140
4. OCZ Platinum 2x2gb DDR3 Ram - ~$75
5. DVD-RW drive - ~$25

Total = ~$530

Feel free to critique the above for suggestions for diff mobo, cpu, ram. I'm wondering if its worth spending another ~120 for the Phenom II X4 955, or maybe downgrade to the Phenom II X2 550 save myself like ~$50.

Though now I just want some advice on the CPU heatsink

I'm thinking the Xigamatek Dark Knight (Though i dunno if the white LEDs would go well with the red in the scout, and does anyone know the LEDs on the dark knight fan can be turned off?) I mainly want it so that i can get the backplate for mounting the heatsink better. I was also consider the OCZ Vendetta 2, but i want a backplate for that one too and i dunno where to find one that is compatible.

The build looks good to me, you could go with a DDR2 board but those prices are pretty well inline with a DDR2 build anyway and you get the added 2-3% extra performance of DDR3. As for the dark knight, you could cut the power wires to the LEDs if you dont like the looks of them, I wanted the fan from the dark knight cooler so bad but it was out of stock everywhere when I built so I had to go with the vanilla HDT =( check around for the thermalright version of the backplate kit, as far as I know it fits the xiggy and the vendetta 2.

I personally would save yourself the $50 and hit up the new X550.

Otherwise that is a solid build for sure.
As for the cooler, I have no idea on that one, but RS is correct on getting the Thermalright Backplate to mount the Vendetta 2 on.

Good luck!

Could i have a link to the proper thermalright back plate? I don't know which one is compatible with the AM3 socket and the vendetta 2/1283

If you're talking about mounting holes, then AM2 = AM3.

If you're talking mounting Clips that attach to the stock bracket, then 754 = 939 = AM2 = AM3... lol.

hmmm I just realized that this is AMD (even after posting an AMD Processor no less).
You won't need a backplate, if its AMD it will use a completely different Mounting process (All of the new AMD Boards have a backplate holding the Cooler Mounting on the other side).

LOL, one of those days it seems....

Drinking one as we speak CM.
And anxiously awaiting the courier that will signal the end to my Co-Workers Build.
The X2 550 should be here today hopefully (hence my suggestion).
Amazing Budget Chip.

Just unlock those other two cores then push them all to 3.8 or 4Ghz

Isn't the mounting for the vendetta 2 only like push pins? I thought this was not ideal as it is not particularly tight. Is there another sort of mounting system that can be bought? Springs or something.

Sorry i'm not too familiar with cpu heatsinks.

In terms of 550 vs 720 yeah... I am debating this switch as well, 50 bucks gets me 1 more core and 300 less mhz.
