The system posted has a custom water cooling setup. He may want that but not wish to assemble it himself. He can get all in one water cooling solutions (or things like tec coolers) that come pre-assembled.

Then why is he looking at a $8800 system? Tell you what, I'll build him one and overclock it for $6500. :)

Make him buy a murderMod case. It'll look better and still cost less than that $8800 machine.

About the RAM... he's pretty set on wanting more than 6GB.
Any suggestions?

Unless he works with huge images or extensive video encoding, or else the extra RAM above 6GB will be completely useless. He'll stress the motherboard, decrease the speed of his RAM, and gain nothing in return. He should just get 6GB of quality RAM (6GB Mushkin Ascent, or if the money is really burning a hole in his pocket, Dominator GT). If he just wants a system to brag about, then I'm quite sure 99% of the enthusiast out there will laugh at rather than envy his 12GB of RAM, whereas great RAM will get him more "bragging rights".

Motherboard wise (if money isn't a big factor, and that seems to be the case) either Rampage or Classified. They're both great high end boards, but then their benefits are also completely lost if your friend doesn't plan on OCing.

He should seriously consider overclocking, or else everything from RAM to motherboard to the processor would be a complete waste. Even the 965 was meant for overclocking (with the unlocked multiplier). And if he's going to overclock, the 965 will not OC better than a 920 D0 unless he's using some extreme cooling (LN2).

In summary: Overclock the damn thing, get some quality RAM rather than another 6GB that he'll most likely never use and lower his performance, get the 920 D0 instead of the 965, then use all this extra money on even better parts (GTX 285s instead of GTX 280s).

I had 2x 6gb kits of the dominators in that list. Although the new Muskins just reviewed look pretty good too. And no, Newegg does not assemble. NCIX will, except for the watercooling I think.

As for the mobo, I think the EVGA Classified and Asus Rampage II Extreme are his best money-blowing options for a build like this.

I have tried to get him to consider 6gb of RAM, but he's convinced he needs more.
Maybe he does... I'm certainly not an expert.
He wants the machine mostly for working with large 3d/2d images... animations... video... stuff like that.
He says he's heard that having 2gb RAM per core is optimal so he really wants 8gb... but I told him about triple-channel and now he's more unsure of what to do.

He's not a local friend, by the way...
I'm pretty sure he lives in the US.
Is there a good site, that will put it together too?

Oh, and if he decides to go with a 965 will a TRUE keep it cool?
It works great on my 920 so I'm guessing it will.
