Default Getting new i7 machine need advice

im planning on getting a bran new i7 gaming machine with liquid cooling in late june. Ive saved up a fund of $3000 and that could go up over the next few weeks. Im ignoring the tax for now and trying to eliminate shipping cost as much as i can. I have gotten alot of advice and put together a list of parts.

Heres the system:
HAF 932 Case $184.99
Core i7 920 $374.99
Gigabyte X58 UD5 mobo $359.99
eVGA GTX 295 w/ backplate $659.99
Corsair Dominator 3x2GB DDR3-1600 $207.24
WD 1TB caviar black HDD $124.99
Corsair 1kw PSU $248.99
Creative Titanium FATAL1TY $151.20
LG 22x w/ lightscribe $36.99
LG 22x Dual-layer $29.99

Heres the cooling:
HW Labs GT Stealth 360 120mm x 3 rad $59.01
Swiftech APOGEE GTZ cpu block $68.29
XSPC 5.25" Bay Clear Reservoir $31.67
Feser One Red UV non-conductive coolant $15.21
DD CPX1 12V Pump $35.95
Corsair triple channel RAM fan $39.99

Also :
Logisys Dual UV Cold Cathode $6.08
Logisys Dual Red Cold Cathode $9.19

Samsung SyncMaster T240 5ms monitor $329.99

TOTAL COST (minus tax) : $2974.74

Thats the entire list right now.

First off i should say that I have never used liquid cooling before but I have a friend who has and will help me set it up. I have biult a few computers but only out of scrounged parts and a very low budget. Nothing like this. But despite this i have the resources to have it put together professionally. I have no intention of doing it by myself.

For the liquid cooling, im not really sure what good brands are. Ive done a bit of research and learned alot but i still don't know all the little things that make a good system. Please give me suggestions for any changes to the cooling.

Please give me all the critisism you can. If you think the entire thing is a dumb idea and a disaster waiting to happen please tell me and give me any suggestions you can. I am very new at this and am upgrading from my p4 3ghz dell 5100.

Thanks you very much.

All I would want 'extra' on this kick ass system is a SSD drive as your OS drive. Use the 1Tb for storage. Check out our SSD reviews!

Are you planning to overclock? Liquid cooling is an expensive, pointless, and potentially dangerous alternative to air cooling. With a proper aftermarket HSF, you can do some good overclocking, nearing 4GHz. Only then does watercooling start being moderately worth while.

If you're not planning to overclock, you're wasting hundreds of dollars for naught. Instead, i'd put the money you'd be spending on the WC solution into upgrading your i7 920 to a 940, or perhaps getting a second GTX 295 for quad-sli. EDIT: or, like the guy above me said, perhaps use that saved money to get an SSD for your OS drive.

Don't get the GTX 295. Learn from me lol. I bought the GTX 295 for $669 and its not worth the money with a i7 build. Maybe if you're using a board that can't do CF/SLI and you're crazy rich a GTX 295 would be a good idea. On a i7 build there are better options, like

2 GTX 275's
3 GTX 260's
2 4890's

Even 2 GTX 260 216's for $200 less would be just as good as the 295.

Or you could get a lower end psu like a 850w and a cheaper mobo, and get GTX 285 sli for the same price as the 295.

Just my advice

My System Specs

Default

For major parts like the GPU, head over to the Buy/Sell forums on major computer enthusiast forums (HWC, Overlock.net and etc.) because they usually have awesome deals, sometimes even on new, unopened parts (altough do realise most of them are in American dolalrs, so you have to do some conversion and see if it's a good deal). I got a GTX 295 shipped for $470 Canadian.

If you buy a $20 giftcard from NCIX, they add free shipping to the entire order.

Personally as mentioned I would go with 2 single GPU cards rather then the GTX 295, the 295 is out performed by the GTX 285 and im pretty certain the GTX 275 as well when the 2 cards are SLIed. Also I would go with the EVGA x58 over the gigabyte board, I am a huge fan of EVGA though...

EVGA X58 ATX LGA1366 DDR3 3PCIE-16 PCI-E1 2PCI SLI SATA2 Sound Dual GBLAN 1394 Motherboard - DirectCanada

$336 is a pretty good price for a nice x58 motherboard.

Where are you buying a 920 for so much?

Intel Core i7 920 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 4.8GT/S - DirectCanada

DC has it for $355 and ive seen it lower then that at NCIX when they have it on sale.

LG W2442PA-BF 24IN Widescreen LCD Monitor Black 2MS 10000:1 300CDM 1920X1080 1080P HAS Tilt HDMI DVI - DirectCanada

Pretty nice 24" monitor for cheap as well..

Also why are you buying 2 seperate DVD writers? just buy a cheap LG or Samsung, the LG writer I bought for $23 was dual layer and had light scribe, just buy 2 of them if you want dual optical. Personally I have NEVER used light scribe nor do I think I ever will, a sharpy is good enough for me.

Lg GH22NS30 Black DVD+RW 22X8X16 DVD-RW 22X6X16 Dl 16X/12X 2MB Sata Oem - DirectCanada

Samsung SH-S223F Black 22X DVD Writer SATA OEM - DirectCanada

couple of good writers, IF you must have Light scribe this is a great writer...

Samsung SH-S223Q/BEBS 22X DVD+-RW SATA DVD Writer Black Lightscribe OEM - DirectCanada

A couple of these...

Evga Geforce Gtx 275 633MHZ 896MB 2.26GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I Hdtv Out Video Card - DirectCanada

Would be better then the GTX 295 in the long run.. or

3 of these would STOMP a GTX 295 for less then the price of a GTX 295...

EVGA E-GEFORCE GTX 260 Core 216 55NM 576MHZ 896MB 1.998GHZ GDDR3 PCI-E 2XDVI-I HDTV Out Video Card - DirectCanada

those couple with the EVGA x58 would be pretty awesome.

Personally I wouldnt pay for A) the over priced Corsair Dominators unless they where the red 1866 versions... B) a memory cooler that didnt come with the card extra (Althought I did get one for free that Im using for lighting in my case =P)

OCZ Gold OCZ3G1600LV6GK 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL 8-8-8-24 Triple Channel Memory Kit - DirectCanada

Save you $100 right there. Or theres the reapers...

OCZ OCZ3RPR1866C9LV6GK Reaper 6GB 3X2GB DDR3-1866 CL9-9-9-28 240PIN Triple Channel Memory Kit - DirectCanada

The OCZ golds have tighter timings then the Corsairs at half the price....

Corsair XMS3 Dominator GT TR3X6G1866C7GTF 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1866 CL 8-8-8-24 Core i7 Memory W/ Fan - DirectCanada

are pretty awesome, and come with a memory cooler but are expensive.

If you go with 2 GTX 275s or 2 GTX 285s scale the PSU back to an 850w, you could even probubly get away with a 750w. If you go with 3 GTX 260s then stick with the 1000w.

Watercooling isnt my thing so I cant help there, I like air cooling but the i7s do hit a limit with air cooling and get quite a bit hotter then C2Ds do at high overclocks, so if you want to lower your temps I wouldnt say W/C is a waste, its just a PITA.

EDIT: sorry that was so long, I was bored =P and Id really like to see you get a kick butt PC in the end

Looks good, but i'd get a 920 D0 from NCIX for $20 more. NCIX.com - Buy Intel Core I7 920 D0 Stepping Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 -SLBEJ- - BX80601920 - D0 In Canada.

And correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldnt the EVGA X58 be a bad board for SLI? Since its 16/8/4.

P6T would be my choice for a budget SLI build. They are $290 at ncix and run at 16x/16x

Chances are 3 GTX 260s wouldnt fill up the bandwidth of a 8x slot, or would see very little loss in performance from that, the P6T would be a good alternative though. The P6T your thinking of at NCIX is the SE version for that price though and only supports Crossfire without a bios flash. btw the EVGA x58 runs at 16/8/8, GTX 285s would probubly see a cut in performance but a GTX 260 more then likely wouldnt, especially when SLIed. The P6T is the same thing, 16/16/8, when SLIed each card will need to perform at the same level as the other 2, so in tri SLI you still technically running at the speed of your weekest link. Both boards would be a good choice IMHO but neither stand up to the classified or other higher end boards when it comes to tri sli.
