Default Small scale headless linux server

I'm currently running my Dlink 323 as a nas, an automate torrent box, and a basic linux server. It's all hacked together and various pieces need various shims and kludges to run. I'm looking at getting a dedicated linux box to work with. Small, low power, low wattage and quiet type deal. I'm looking into min-itx solution or even point of sale boxes.

Any tips?

My System Specs

Default

shuttle barebone are doing realy great job. You can also order a cheap dell but they are realy tiny so hard drive are a little trouble. For my part my server is set in a NZXT. Products. because of the many Hard drive space, if you use the 5.25 for hard disk you can have up to 7 of these data monster wich is pretty cool in a server for DATA. Also prety quiet and nice looking:) ( I hate led so i just take them off you can unplug yay :). So these are my point, get a shuttle of build a micro server yourself note that microserver will most of the time giving you much more exopansion possibilities with time;)

I'm not sure I want to go as big as the nzxt box you listed (368 x 278.2 x 443.9 mm) when what I think I'm looking for is only a slight improvement on a nas box (101.6mm x 198.1mm x 127mm). Most of my media collection fits on a 750gb and I've got a few 1tb as well as various smaller drives. Pretty sure a 2 or so drive setup will handle my needs where nas storage is concerned.

This is more of a test bed server I'll be messing around with (that also handles nas). From what I've run on the dns-323 just moving to x86 anything and sata2 with probably the smallest amount of memory possible (1+ gb) will see improvements. I'm not so much interested in those improvements as getting a dedicated box I don't have to hack around.

The dns specs
500 Mhz Marvell ARM CPU
RAM 64 MB (32MBx2)
Flash ROM 8 MB
Gigabit lan

So ya, almost anything will be faster, have more space, etc.

With that sort of information what kind of tiny boxes would you recommend?

If I were to pick any of the shuttle products the Shuttle KPC K45 is probably the only bare bones kit I'd consider. Most of the other are more focused on tiny pcs capable of some level of gaming. I'm not at all interested in anything graphical for this system or can't fit more then a single notebook drive.

That WindPC looks good. Atoms are decent for small tasks and are great on power.

Have you played with an atom before? Has anyone here?

Recommended atom based board? I'd really like to use something as low power as an atom and perhaps an itx board. I'm working towards a headless server type system that doesn't need graphics processing at all.

Aye, I've played with Atom and it's the perfect way to go for stuff like this. Any ol' Atom board will do, they're all pretty much the same anyway. Do you need any add-in cards? Unfortunately Atom boards only come with one PCI slot, OR one PCI-E x1 slot; but you probably won't need either. Sometimes they come with both:

Here's a little build (in a little case, but if you want to add more storage then get a bigger one) - This is pretty much the same build I have with a different HDD and different RAM

Apex MI-008 w/250W PSU - $52
ECS 945GCT-D - $80 after $10 MIR
2gb Kingston ValueRAM (2x1GB) DDR2-533 - $25
LG DVD-RW-DL - $27
WD Caviar Green 2TB - $360

And that pretty much sums it up for $544. I dunno about how much you need for storage so I went with the max. Feel free to pick and choose, of course.

Well If you want to play a little maybe a good solution will be one of the HP Media Slimline. Some of them have C2D or Athlon X2 at pretty low price. When I was working at Futureshop we were selling them at 379.99 wich is pretty good spec for the buck. You also have a better onboard video card + many other interesting feature...and a crappy remote to plug to the tv:)wow:P They are little very little and pretty good.
