Default Looking for a cost/performance laptop.

Hello guys,
I'm in need of help finding a laptop computer and did some browsing on the internet to look for the one I can afford which can bring some decent performance. Pricing is quite different from desktop computer and its components. I'm only going to use it for word processor and internet surfing. But I'd prefer Vista over XP. The screen size won't matter much as long as it's not too small (say too small being smaller than 11or 12 inch). I'd like to have a internal dvd-burner. I will do more research and post further questions in this thread.
Thanks.

That's easy. Future Shop and Best Buy. They'll have awesome deals on those kinds of laptops. Not questions asked.

This will probably be the only time I say that those companies are the way to go. I like custom myself. You can find a 14" for $600 for just those purposes.

Future Shop: Computers: Laptops: Acer Aspire 14.1" AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core TL60 Laptop (AS4520-5846) - Future Shop Exclusive

Acer for cheap...

Future Shop: Computers: Laptops: Emachines 14.1" AMD Athlon 2650E 1.6GHz Laptop (EMD620-5748)

emachines for cheaper though I hate emachines...

I also like this one

Future Shop: Computers: Laptops: Dell Inspiron 1545 15.6" Intel Pentium Dual Core T3400 Laptop (I15-2169E) - English - FS Exclusive

A little pricer but Ive always liked dell for their laptops.

If you have a Staples close by they do, occasionally, have some good deals on laptops as well. One thing with these guys to remember is that they don't always service what they sell but send you to the manufacturer and they mfg registered repairer, so don't look for a lot of support.

You've given a pretty good impression of what you are looking for but haven't stated a budget. Therefore I am going to say Lenovo has some great models in a broad range of prices starting with the SL series. Lenovos will be much better quality machines than any of those Acers or Emachines from the big box stores. If you are travelling a lot I would recomend 14". 15" would be absolute max imo.

RedFlag Deals will occasionally post up some laptop deals from Staples. However lately there hasn't been good deals. Also if you buy online from Staples, you could save some money thanks to the use of coupons.

Since you're in Toronto, if you're going down to Buffalo, check out Best Buy. Best Buy America's site has some excellent gaming ASUS laptops for under $1000 USD.

Lenovas are horible looking machines though, I like some design and style integrated into my laptop as its going to be traveling around with me. Hp sells some very nice laptops for a decent price that look nice and the build quality is just as good as lenova imho.

I'm not familiar with Processors like Intel Centrino Mobile and Intel Atom?
How do they differ other processor like Intel Dual Core or Core 2 Duo?

Also, is there anyway I can exclude OS from the package?
I already have CD and DVD for Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit.

For the most part OS is included. Some like Xoticpc offer OS separately but you don't need anything from them.

Atom = netbook CPU
Centrino/Centrino 2 = the Intel platform of MB, chipset, cpu, nic, (Celeron - Core 2 Duo with 800MHz FSB)

Centrino 2 supports up to 1066Mhz FSB & DDR3 Ram. Centrino tops out at 800MHz with DDR2.
