Default New rig :)

Hey guys,

I managed to sell some old junk including my old computer and I now have 1200$ max (taxes and shipping included) for a new rig.

I will mostly use it for : gaming, movies, music, work... well the usual stuff.

I already have the OS (win xp sp3) but I can swith to vista or something else if I can get better performances and Im mostly an AMD fan now. Intel is more expensive and dosnt give much more of a kick to my opinion. Im still open to any suggestions.

What I want it pure speeds and very good gaming graphics. Im tired of long cpu booting/loading times. I need a new screen, something big would be nice and a sound system also 5.1 with sub would be great.

So, I was thinking about dual WD 640GB blacks HDD. Someone told me I can kick the speed alot in RAID. I was also thinking about a ~200$ Graphic card and an overclocked dual core cpu. I previously had a 9800 xfx geforce and I was running everything @ veryhigh graphics. It was sweet and I was 100% satisfied. Im not playing crysis or anything like that, mostly COD4, COD5, Left4dead and the upcomming blizzard games (sc2, d3). I still want to future proof my computer so.. what do you propose?

This is a basic sketch, Im really here to check the pulse on what I can get for that amount of money nowaday.
Any ideas are welcome!

Also, I will be out of the country for the next 3 months, should I wait for further price drops?

If you like AMD go with a tricore x720 on a gigabyte 790X motherboard, this is a great combo and smokes most if not all the dual cores around but is quite affordable. As for windows if its only the 32bit xp then you wont be able to use 4 gigs of ram so moving to 64 bit vista or xp would give you that extra ram and opperate at its full potential. 640 blacks are wicked hard drives and youd love them, I hear they run extremely well in raid 0. Graphics you could grab either a GTX 260 216 or a 4870/4890 depending on what make you like, both are roughly $200 these days.

Not sure if you could fit vist 64 bit + a new monitor + a speaker system into that budget and still have an amazing gaming PC. Youd almost have to go with either a dual core 7750 or intels E5200 and cheap out on everything else. youd need roughly $150 for the speakers then another $200 minimum for a 22" monitor and vista is usualy atleast $100.

This is my first search, theres nothing definitive, it will only give me a better view of the rig

119$ with 15 MIR for the mobo : Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P ATX AM3 AMD790X DDR2 CrossFireX 2PCI-E 2PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN Motherboard - DirectCanada

Is this board a good ocer ?

88$x2 so 176$ for the hdd : 1click2computers - Buy Mfg's Part-#:WD6401AALS online in Canada

For the GPU, it turns around 210-250$ (300$ for the lastest 4890) wich brand should I choose?
Xfx, gigabyte, HIS, Diamond, ASUS...? Warranty/durability/cooling wich brand/model is the best?

ASUS Radeon 4870 Dk Top 815MHZ 512MB 3.7GHZ DDR5 PCI-E Dual DVI HDCP HDTV Out Video Card - DirectCanada

I like the looks of this one. Plus there is no useless plastic protector junk wich dosnt allow air flow.

So far, its a 505-545$ total with 15$ MIR

61.58$ for the ram G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK PC2-8500 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-5-15 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit - DirectCanada

G.Skill is the best bang for the buck, I you know a better brand plz tell me.

Cpu around 100$ for a 6000+ 3.0, I can throw in a xygmatek heatsink for another 40$ and oc the cpu to 4.0ish.

EDIT : I believe I missed the point here. The point was to buy a tricore cpu right?
Would it really increase the performances? because dual core is alot cheaper xD

Cd/dvd sata for 25$

Case : around 50$ Antec 300? I had this one for my last computer it was nice... am i bit tired of the looks tho...

Psu : 600W for 74.99$ NCIX.com - Canada's Premier Computer Store - Great Technology, Service and Selection.

So right now the total is : 856$

I'll drop the os for now and use my old XP so i'll save a little there.

I need to buy a mouse/keyboard so its an extra 20$ for a wireless kit.

Now all is left is the monitor and the sound system...
I definitly want an HDMI compatible monitor and something bigger ( I had a 19" so 22" would be nice ).. this one here looks great for 214$

NCIX.com - Buy BenQ E2200HD 21.5IN 16:9 Widescreen Black LCD Monitor 2MS 1920X1080 10000:1 Senseye HDMI DVI VGA - E2200HD In Canada.

If you have a better pick please tell me.

For the sound something like for 85$ would be nice. I dont need much more than that. I had the Z-540 model previously... as long as it is as good or even better im fine. NCIX.com - Buy Logitech X-540 5.1 Speaker System Black 70W RMS W/ FDD2 & Wired Remote - 970223-0403 In Canada.

That setup would be 1175$ before taxes and shipping 50$ taxes and around 30$ shipping so, almost 1200$.
Im pretty sure, with your help, I can manage to squeeze a little extra from this.

Cant wait for comments/suggestions xD

I wannnnttt too buyyyy ;) lol

The only choice I'm really stuck on up there is your choice of CPU. If you're going to stick with a non Phenom II AMD chip, you'd probably be better served with a lower end intel dual core.

Were talking about a ~200$ gap here.

How much more powerfull would the cpu be - gaming and speed wise?

If im getting a low increase in gaming like idk.. 8fps, i'd rather stick with a dual core intel or amd.

Even without price matching it's under $100 difference NCIX.com - Buy AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition Triple Core Processor AM3 2.8GHZ 7.5MB Cache 95W 45NM Retail Box - HDZ720WFGIBOX In Canada. .

I know $100 isn't pocket change, but in terms of performance you're talking about 3 year old tech (that didn't impress very many folks compared to intel) vrs AMDs new tech which puts out some pretty decent #s even though it doesn't compete with i7.

EDIT: +1 to everything Sswilsons telling you he knows what hes talking about.

Your never going to get a 6000+ to 4ghz without some serious phase changing or LN2, those chips hit all kinds of walls at like 3.3ghz. You want anything over 3.5ghz and you have to go with Phenom II or an E5200. X2 6000+ is like 2 years old intels core 2 duos walk alllll over them. as for the rest of the build stick with XFX or if you can EVGA if you go nvidia. XFX has double life time warrantys and better Customer service then the other ATI brands. G.Skill is awesome and id highly recommend them. If you want a great cheap case go with the CM-690 its easy to work on has great potential for cooling and is completely tooless. Also for videocard I prefer the plastic covers as it allows for great air flow and directs all the hot air out the back of the case instead of circulating it around on the inside your case raising your ambient case temps.

if you want a cheap AMD chip dont look at anything lower then the 7750 BE as thats technically what they are calling a phenom II dual core although its not nearly a phenom II. The x-540 speakers are pretty damn good for the price and I hear good things about the benq monitors. Wireless for gaming keyboard and mouse is 100% fail, go wired or go home. Nothing is worse then having a wireless keyboard drop out in the middle of the game and have to mess around with it to get it to reconnect.

You would see worlds more performance going for 1 HDD non raid and an X3 then you would going with 2 HDDs and a lame CPU. If I where you id drop the 2nd HDD and go for a better CPU, you can always buy more HDDs down the road but its harder to sell off a 3 year old CPU and try and upgrade it.

I am looking at some budget components for a computer for my Mom, without the gamer video card of course :), here is a list of what I think are pretty good components that you would be able to game on within your budget:

NCIX.com - Buy Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Dual Core Processor LGA775 2.8GHZ 1066FSB 3MB Retail - BX80571E7400 In Canada.
NCIX.com - Buy ASUS P5Q Pro ATX LGA775 P45 DDR2 2PCI-E16 CrossFire 3PCI-E1 2PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN eSATA Motherboard - P5Q Pro In Canada.
NCIX.com - Buy G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK PC2-8500 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-1066 CL5-5-5-15 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit - F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK In Canada.
NCIX.com - Buy Antec Truepower New 550W Power Supply ATX12V V2.3 Active PFC 80 Plus 120MM PWM Fan - TP-550 In Canada.
NCIX.com - Buy Gigabyte Radeon HD 4870 750MHZ 1GB 3.6GHZ DDR5 PCI-E16 Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out Video Card - GV-R487D5-1GD In Canada.
NCIX.com - Buy Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case 300 ATX 3X5.25 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB & Audio - THREE HUNDRED In Canada.
NCIX.com - Buy Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 7200RPM 32MB Dual Proc 3.5IN SATA Hard Drive OEM 5YR Mfg Warranty - WD6401AALS In Canada.
NCIX.com - Buy Samsung SH-S223F/BEBS 22X Speed Plus Black SATA DVD Writer OEM - SH-S223F/BEBS In Canada.

Total about $926 without tax or shipping. The Video card is $254 of that and a hell of a deal. You could lop off about $150 and go with a 4670 for now, a very well thought of card for a budget gaming rig. Or you could look on the Buy and Sell here and maybe find a good second hand to keep the price down. Save a few bucks on a different MB, too, there are great ones out there.

Just some ideas.
