Id go with an nvidia GTX 260/285 if you game alot. Other then that maybe a bigger hard drive. If your planning to upgrade to i7 theres no reason to get a new cpu or motherboard and you might as well keep your ram till you upgrade to DDR3.

would you see a good performance hit by going 88gt to 260/285?

I think if he upgrades to GTX 285, his CPU will bottleneck ... no? Depending on the games you play, I think a 8800GT is plenty. But let's you wanna play FarCry2 or Crysis... you need a good video card.

I found a good performance gain going from E6600 to E8500 and I still have my 8800GTX.

If that CPU is overclocked upwards of 3ghz there wont be a bottleneck. And if he upgrades to a good GPU now he can reuse it when he goes i7. My E7400 @ even 3.2ghz doesnt bottleneck my 2 9800GTXs. You probubly noticed your increase in performance going from sub 3ghz frequencies. An 8800GT is not really plenty anymore, it was last year but games are getting more and more demanding, my single 9800GTX+ was struggling in a few games hence me going to SLI.

Yeah youd notice a little difference in load times and what not, besides that its pretty cheap to buy 2x2gbs now a days. Have you tried overclocking that CPU? You might get a decent increase in performance right there too.

MSI P6N SLI Platinum PCSTATS Review - Overclocking the MSI P6N SLI Platinum Motherboard

Thats a review of the motherboard, but you can basically read how they did their overclocking on the board and do your own from there. Its not to hard you could probubly hit 3 ghz without to much trouble.
