Sounds good to me, there. I went with the LG because it was supposedly one of the most quite drives, while being reliable and faster than its immediate competition.

Not like it would be a big loss if a drive went down, but I don't want someone banging at my door in the middle of the night, "The computer you built for me broke!" With, of course, no explanation as to which part.

...It's kind of sad how easily I can picture that...

All of my latest drives have been samsungs, but that's been based mostly on the fact that they at least ship with some kind of software which will burn a lightscribe disk. (Nero)

Yeah, Buddy #1 doesn't need lightscribe. I'm just going to go with a Pioneer SATA drive, it seems...

I don't use it (lightscribe) all that much, but it comes in handy for things like burning off the OS disks from the prebuilts, or when a new version of a bootable app (like UBCD) that I like to keep around comes out.

My brand new LG burner sounds like a jet taking off when it spins up, deffinetly not quiet =P

any drive sounds loud when it starts the disc up at max speed >_<

I have a Samsung and an LG drive. I haven't noticed any differences in acoustics.
