Default Which CPU to use?

My brother's motherboard just fried, and I'm not sure which cpu to get him. I'm leaning towards either an e8400, or a phenom x4 920. I have no experience with the phenom's, so I'm not sure which will be better. He games and watches movies on his pc. newegg has the phenom 920 for $230, while the e8400 is $200 on ncix, without price matching.

i have an e8400 with a true 120 overclocked to 4ghz no problem. :) i haven't had an AMD chip since my athlon 1.6, so i couldn't tell ya how they compare, i just know the e8400 has been good for me.

Ah yes... the Dual vs Quad argument.

Honestly... it depends on what your Brother does with his computer.
Most times, a decent Dual Core at a Higher per Core MHz will do better than more cores at a lower MHz since 99.99% of applications are not multithreaded.

That said, more and more are becoming multithreaded. Most big name games are multithreaded nowadays.

I'd still go with Intel for a Quad though.
If you're not OCing, stock for stock is pretty comparable.
But Intel usually shines over AMD when pushed.

Why not take the middle path with the 3 core 720 BE?
It's $185 at ncix this week.

If he does not upgrade too much I would go with the quad. Toss up really.

I should have added a third option. He's going with a q9550. I was building him something with around a $600 budget, including case, cpu, motherboard and heatsink. He talked to my dad, and because he "worked so hard this week" dad said he'll pay, so my brother's upgrading to a q9550.. lucky bum!

Perhaps you could switch up the CPU's last moment and try to hide it? Gard, I still look back to those days a few months ago when I would have killed for a Q9550, but then I caught the Splurge Fever and bought an i7...

I'm sure you've already thought about this but it's safe to assume that you're putting together a brand-new system? If your bro's mobo fried and had an LGA775/AM2+ chipset, wouldn't it be cheaper to just replace the board and use the same CPU? Or did you/him catch the splurge fever and decided to go all out on a new build?
