I doubt a 500GB is the fastest, those 640GB drives are all the rage ATM. Somebody else on here said Seagate has a single platter 500GB drive out but I somehow doubt NCIX has them in stock. Also wasn't there a recent issue with 7200.12 drives where they'd lock themselves?

lol that's going to be a tough hurdle to get over...

Since its an BUDGET BUILD, and you choose a 4830/9800GT, i think heres a better list!

Gigabyte Ga-EP43-DS3L $98
Intel E5200 or E5200, $88 or $100 (why a low end CPU? saves money and only about 1%-5%max FPS lost during gaming compared to a E7xxx and with MILD overclock it should be fine)
Ram? any ram under $50(4GB) should be good, you can find them a lot during NCIX weekly Sales
Antec Sonata Case $125 (like steve said) its a decent case with a really good PSU, although i personally dont like the opening/closing front doors
XFX 4830 $135
Western Digital 640 Black $89
Xigmateck HDT-S1283 OR OCZ Vendetta 2 both uder $40
Bolt Thru Kit $10
any brand DVD burner. $25

These come to $660-$672 For a complete PC Before shipping cost, GST, assembly, recycling fees and of course shipping.

Now all you need is a 20" LCD and some keyboards and mice + a set of speakers.

With the following set up your friend can play Crysis at 1680x1050 resolution with average 20FPS

And of course an mild overclock to 3ghz or so

AnandTech - Seagate 7200.12 500GB forum thread.

Well we're gonna be waiting till at least Wednesday for the new NCIX sale. Hopefully we'll be able to get him something good.

@jd. The 7200.12 are the 500GB platter hard drives. And that issue was with the 7200.11 I think.

Yeah, but there's been 500GB 7200.12s way before this single 500GB platter stuff was introduced so I'm just saying it might be hard to get the right model.

I thought the 7200.12 model drives were just released over the last few weeks.

I would ditch the Seagate 7200.12's because you can pay just a bit more money and get peace of mind PLUS better performance with the WD Caviar Black 640GB.

Just as well, I would consider spending the extra money on a 4850 because it will get far more frames than the 9800GT or 4830, plus it's still good for folding. I got a Diamond 4850 a while back and I love the performance for the price, I got mine for $170-ish after MIR. The XFX 4850 is $190 with a two-slot cooler. It's your call.

As for the case, Don't bother with a full tower (obviously). As per the usual roster of cases, the CoolerMaster 590, Thermaltake M9, Antec Sonata III, Antec 300, Antec 900, CM 690, or Antec 902 are always choice, when pricematched at NCIX of course.

Isn't a 4830 basically a 4850, but just slower cores and memory? And the Seagate 7200.12 ARE the new 500GB platter drives. The ones that had problems were 7200.11 as seen here.

What do you mean full tower....No one ever gets full towers. It's usually mid towers now lol. But yea, I'm definitely gonna look into the Antec Sonata III, as well as a separate case and PSU option.

So the sale starts tonight. I'll definitely update this thread later on tonight. Unless NCIX has a good AMD combo deal, we'd be getting something such as the E7200 or E5200. Btw, does NCIX PM Newegg's combo deals?

Edit: Just remembered that Hardware Canucks has it's awesome PM function. I was PMing just Newegg last time. So how does one price match at NCIX?

There's a button at the bottom of the shopping cart.
