Default What is equal to Nvidia 8600GTS on AMD?

Hello!

Im looking for a video card for a friend. He wants to play farcry2 on at least medium quality.

On the ubisoft site, I read that for "game enhancing performances" he should get at least a 8600GTS. The 8600GTS is more expensive than the 9800GT and Im not sure it will be compatible since his current board is AMD2+ and his processor is a 5600+ also from AMD.

Which video card (best bang for the buck) do you think he should pop in?

I was thinking about the 4650 1gb which is ~100$. Im not 100% sure what its worth tho. I saw it beat the 8800gs in a review, wounlt bet on it tho..

thanks!

4650 would be my guess, but so long as he's not going to run SLI you can drop in either an ATI or a Nvidia video card without any problems.

I would say for an ATI equivalent the minimum you would want would be a Radeon HD 4830. They can be had for $116.19 on newegg.ca

This card seems like a pretty good deal from what I was reading, topping the 3870 in every game tested. The performance is similar if not a tad bit lower than the 9800 GT just to give you an idea of an equivalent card.

Just give us your budget, and we'll recommend you a good GPU. Since the 4650 is $100, I'd guess your budget is $100.

Look into the 9600GT or 9800GT. Both are considerably faster than the 8600GTS and can be had for around the same price, and if you're lucky, under $100 for the 9800GT. On the AMD side, get at least a 4830.

What's the rest of his system specs?

Yes, around 100$ is the budget right now.

The system is really basic. Much likely and Integrated gigabyte board, 2/4gb kingston value ram, 5600+ amd processor, 500gb hdd.. very basic ;)

Nvidia 8600GTS should be equal to ati's x850.

Ati 4830(stock) > 9800GT OC (should be equal the 9800gt 55nm)

Budget $100, but we are missing the most important information. What size monitor?

Ati is releasing a RV740 with 40nm and it should be under the $100 price tag to counter the Nvidia 9600 series

I'd say go with the Sapphire HD4830. Goes for like $120 - $10MIR on Newegg.ca...

And it's way faster than the 8600GTS IMO.

The PSU would also help decide what GPU. The 48xx series require 450W. 46xx series might be good choice for low watt PSU

To chose your graphics card, you need to also look at screen size (resolution) and your what your power supply can handle...

for $100, the ATI HD 4830 is your best choice and is the equivalent to a highly overclocked 9800GT... much better in comparison to an 8600GTS or 4650

4570 should be a good replacement for it. the 4650 would be faster than it.
