Default New Build thanks to PSU take out play

Good day,

I am finally back up with my own system after a just horrid Jan. I had a vid card go down, but no biggie I had another, but I think that was my warning, but I did not heed it.

A week later my PSU went down taking my DFI mobo, my Mushkin RAM (1 stick) and my other Sapphire vidcard. Not a good time. I had just got the Sapphire so I was able to return it and pick up an Asus HD4870 1GB Dark Knight (my god this cooler rocks, 57deg under full FAHGPU load and silent, it never goes over 60% fan speed as per GPUz). I was able to also get a fast turn around on ram as it was one of my newer sticks I bought for my Vista upgrade. My PSU was around 5ish yrs old, first 750w I was able to buy, so it was time I guess. I just ordered and got my self the OCZ 1000w based on HardOCP and HWC reviews, with a bottom mounted PSU modular isn't worth the extra cost, since the bundle sits neatly on the floor of the ATCS 840 anyhow.

I had all ready ordered my Phenom II so it was ready to go, and I am very happy my travel status with work caused me to delay the install, as I may have lost it too, but my old AMD 6400+ x2 still kicken in my buds system.

I was not willing to wait for DFI RMA (my own issue they appear to be very fast, just wanted new system up) turn around and picked up the Asus M3A79T Deluxe, after swearing "Never Asus again!!!!", but this board rocks!!!. 8+2 Phase power, 4xPCIe x8, or 2xPCIe x16, 16GB ram support very well laid out, and I got rev 1.01G with newest BIOS upon opening box (what are the chances). So far I am very happy, and Asus has redeemed themsevles for my opinion anyway. Hopen long term just gets better.

So as my sig shows, my new system is up. Now with AMDs AoD installed, I will be slowly OCing this puppy. I have the Thermalright 120 extreme cooler with a Noctua fan so I am set for cooling, and with it set to pull air through the cooler and send it up directly at the pair of 230mm fans on my ATCS 840, there is no fear of air flow ( also reversed the standard rear exhaust fan that sits over the IO plate to be an intake, feeding cool air directly to the CPU cooler, and equalizing air pressure in the case between intake and exhaust).

The Asus HD4870 1GB is great, and the Dark Knight cooler? Money! Incredible low temps, 44ish idle and 57ish under 98% load. Fan is so quiet I cannot hear it, my new system is so quiet its unreal. All fans controlles by the NZXT Sentry LX, this is one awesome geek piece of hardware. Really think it was worth the cash.

Have read that with mild voltage overage, on air you can get 3.6 to 3.8GHz from the Phenom II 940, which is a very nice OC. I am aiming for no more then 15% voltage OC and hoping to get 3.6GHz, since I leave my system on 24/7.

Ah, sorry to hear about your Mobo, RAM, and GFX Card getting fried. That sucks, happened to me one time when I bought an OEM computer with an OEM PSU...

Thanks, yeah it sucks, but you know I had the bug in my ear to replace it early fall, and I didn't. Probably would not have had the big failure if I had.
