My mother wants/needs a new tower/home server

My mother is a CGA and deosnt need a power vid card
Deosnt need a power CPU
Cost, the lower the better

Already has

Opticals ( original )
Floppy ) Oroginal
***
Needs

Psu
***
Mobo with onboard video thats DX9/onboard audio/NIC/Sata ( 4 ports )
cheap entry level cpu

all else will be salvaged from my closet of many treasures

Price is key, the apps beiug run are Excel, AccPacc/simplyaccounting/internet/games that require maybe DX8

Does she need an OS? If so you might be better off with a $299/$399 Staples/Futureshop special.

Otherwise... have a look at NCIX's bundled deals. There's probably an AMD bundle there with your name on it. My suggestion for a decent case/psu would be the Sonatta III.

Yep those Ncix bundles are pretty sweet and then again we bought my little cousin a desktop last month for $399 Amd Tri core system. It had everything he could need except video card and lol i dont think yer mother games right?

But since you have some of the stuff the Ncix deals might be better they have those Motherboard + Cpu deals.

This should do the job more than adequately...at a nice price.

Athlon64 X2 4600+ $68.50

ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus $61.43

Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X2048-6400(C5) $44.02 ...if you don't have suitable RAM already.

Sparkle Power SPI ATX-400PN $44.50

Power Cord $1.62

All totalled...$220.07 + S/H + Tx.

I use that PSU on all my "budget-builds"..and no complaints. I would buy one for myself if i only needed a cheaper PSU.

GL.

Not bad, but again.... if an OS is required, something like this Future Shop: Computers: Desktop Computers: Acer AMD Athlon X2 4400+ 2.3GHz Computer (AM1201-E1621A)= or this STAPLES | BUREAU EN GROS would come in at around the same price, but already includes all of the spare parts required for a home build.

It really is hard to put together a low end system (with legit OS) for less money than it costs to pick one up at one of the big box stores.

Something else I just noticed is that even the low end big box store computers now seem to ship with Vista Home Premium vice just Home Basic. That's a big improvement over what I saw last year.

Then a tri-core would be overkill as well(IMO). A half-decent dually will enable her to run several apps at once(if she needs to), will be cheaper and use less power.
