Default 300$ build for a friend

Hey guys! Welcome to a brain wacking puzzle!!

My friend asked me for a "good" computer. Well, anything that beats a single core P4! :)

He has a very, very low budget.. It has to be under 300$ including taxes(5% here ) and shipping. Shipping from 1 site only would be great too. Which should be ok since he dosnt need much.
He wants to run Fallout 3 on at least, medium graphics. High would be heaven.

System Requirements Minimum Recommended Windows[28] Operating System Windows XP or Windows Vista CPU Pentium 4 2.4 GHz or equivalent processor Intel Core 2 Duo Memory 1 GB / 2GB (Vista) 2 GB
Graphics Hardware DirectX 9.0c compliant card with 256 MB RAM (NVIDIA 6800 or better / ATI X850 or better) DirectX 9.0c compliant card with 512 MB RAM (NVIDIA 8800 series, ATI 3800 series)

Since I didnt find any bundle, i was thinking about :
Case with psu - $37.80 - Startech ATX6350BK Value Series Silver Black ATX Mid Tower Case 4X5.25 1X3.5 5X3.5INT 350W - DirectCanada
Mobo - 41.39$ - https://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11430BD3409&vpn=GeForce6100PM-M2(2.0)&manufacture=ECS
Video card - 42.80 - Gigabyte Gf 8500GT 600MHZ 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E VGA DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out DIRECTX10 Video Card Turbo Force - DirectCanada

130.49 so far

2g Memory - ? - ~30$

CPU - 37.99$ - Newegg.ca - AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
HDD - 52.11$ - Xpress Canada - Hard Drives > Desktop Drives > 3.5" SATA Drives : Hitachi Deskstar 320GB 3.5" SATA 7200rpm 16MB (0A35411).
DVD - 28.99$- A-Power.com - Buy SAMSUNG SH-S223Q/BEBN DVDRW DVD Writer.. - Canada

276.93 total
13.80 taxes
~30$ shipping
320.77$

Issues
1- Compatibility wise, im not sure that everything will work out. As i said in other treads, im a newb at this, but im learning fast!. I'll be setting up my first computer this week.
2- I'm not sure the power supply will be enought... im not even sure it wont break after 1 week of use.
3- Im not happy with the cpu, im sure I can find better for this price.
4- Im not happy with the video card neither, a 7600gs would be better..
5- For the OS (WHICH I ALREADY HAVE) I was thinking about something light like windows trust which is a very very light version of windows xp sp1.

Any suggestions are highly welcome.

I really appreciate it guys

Cactus, you have an intel (LGA775 socket) mobo and an AMD (AM2 socket) processor listed there. They will NOT work together.

True. You are right. And its funny to see I picked 2-3 pieces in that bundle w/o knowing it.

I tried to add it to shopping cart and it shows a price around 400$
So, i tried to price match everything.... but for some reason it wont let me. I enter the price and the URL of the competitor, then I hit update and it just dosnt update. Plus, after this I cant click pricematch for that same item anymore.. weird....

I tried to pricematch the board to 41$ but it dosnt show in my cart. Same thing for the processor and the momery. For the HDD, DVD, and CASE its a total of 137$ i'll post all the prices in my next post.

For that kind of budget I'd watch dell.ca for their sales .. I got an elderly couple a pentium dual core system for $299 with free delivery.. I was pretty impressed (I could never build a comparable system with an OS for that kind of money)

OR

NCIX PC Bundle Deal Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2GB 250GB DVDRW USB Sound Video LAN - Unassembled

312.79 Sub total

I'll save a few bucks if I get all the part separatly (is that a word) well, 1 by 1 and price match them... as long as the site lets me do it.. weird bug. Thing is, it really has to be under 300$ or very very close because over that...Well, lets say I dont really want to pay the extra from my pocket

Altrought, im still not impressed by the graphic card and the memory.

Anyone has an idea of anything which would be best kick for the buck?

I'm just gonna make 1 suggestion. If your friend has a P4 PC right now, can you gut it.. and reuse the case? That way you can buy a cheap/but good PSU. Don't go near that Startech PSU if at all possible... a bad PSU can take the motherboard, CPU, RAM, HDD.. (almost anything it powers) with it.... if it croaks.

Here is a great little PSU, that is dirt-cheap, and should offer increased reliability..as well as quality power(it features aPFC, and 80+ efficiency ). You would have to act fast though, as it's only on sale til the Nov.18th. GL with the build.

Edit: You have to buy a power cord, unless you use the one from your friends old machine.
