I remember making that jump, it was a while ago, but worth it. I'd have to agree with the above middle build, but also suggest the Corsair 620, for being of quality, and modular. And, of course being a long time ATI fan boy (), I have to throw my vote in for a 4850 as well. I haven't checked the prices on your stuff, but it should be on par with the other cards you are looking at.

otay,

- 2 x 2 gb kit seems like a no brainer. been so long since i bought ram i neglected to notice 2gb sticks even existed. now what is the deal with 4 gb of memory and windows XP? i heard it can't utilize that much. if that is the case are there issues associated with this?

- PSU - thanks for that. think i will look into the Corsair 620W but is good to know i could operate with 550W. have no idea what new systems draw so went big. hehe.

- DVD Burner, HSF and HDD's. i have that covered minus the HSF. will the stock HSF suffice or should i consider 3rd party? may have to pick up a 1 TB HDD just for & giggles.

- considered a more robust CPU (E8400) but being cash hampered i figure i can always upgrade that later. and probably will.

- GPU - looked at the 4850 but it costs a fair bit more than the 9800GT. still not sure on ATI vs NVidia. i have always played games with the graphic settings low, even when my comp was good enough to run the current games maxed. a handy quirk that probably makes the vid card choice moot.

- the dark side will save me money on suntan lotion!!

help on cases! choosing a case is like choosing a grape from a bunch. which is the juiciest?

this build won't be happening for at least 2 weeks. stuck out of town making the money to pay for this so keep it coming!

No issues on having more memory than XP memory addressing can use other than the fact that it won't use it. :)

You'll still get more available memory than 2X1 G.

Case wise, look at something like the Coolermaster 590/690. Both good budget cases. Should be under $100. Not the best for cable management, but more than enough space for what you are building. I've got a couple threads with pics of my build (see sig) in a CM 590. I would go for the 8400 now, if you can afford it. You should still be able to price match it and save a fair bit. Oh, and the stock HSF will be fine, if you don't plan on overclocking. You probably could a bit, but I don't think anyone would recommend doing so.

A case? It all depends what's left budget-wise. And since choosing a case basically comes down to a personal choice, it's difficult to help you here. Ross may be in the best position to help you.

I'd agree with Charlie, case is personal choice. If you want suggestions, my pleasure.. budget case = Cooler Master 590/690, I like the CM 590 because it is more deeper, it's better designed and more functional than the 590. More expensive case = Cooler Master HAF 932 / Cosmos S.. And if you have lots of money lol = Silverstone TJ 07, Lian Li V2000, mostly any Lian Li full tower case is just very well designed..

As for memory, I will have to agree with you lovesauce (..oh no no :P).. 2x1GB is also what I have, happy with mine, I see no use for XP Pro with 4GB..
I wish you bought your stuff before the CAD$ started falling, the 4850 was almost so close to price with the 9800GT, it was the best bang for the buck card, and now with it being $200+, it's getting expensive really.
