Default How does this look?

Hi guys. Hadn't really planned on upgrading just yet, but, you know how it is. So this is what I've come up with. Have not been keeping up with newest technology out there but I think this will do, all thoughts and comments appreciated. I'm aiming for a mid range gaming system that's upgradeable. Prices are from Directcanada site.

#1 - ASUS P5Q Pro ATX LGA775 P45 DDR2 2PCI-E16 CrossFire 3PCI-E1 2PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN eSATA Motherboard - $150.15 (I recently bought an EVGA 8800 GT video card so I'll be using that)

#2 - Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Dual Core Processor LGA775 3.16GHZ Wolfdale 1333FSB 6MB Retail - $252.46

#3 - OCZ Reaper OCZ2RPR800C44GK 4GB DDR2 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-15 Memory Kit - $89.35

#4 - OCZ GameXStream 700W ATX12V 24PIN SLI Ready Active PFC ATX Power Supply 120MM Fan Black - $99.99

I'll be doing some case switching and scrapping of old parts to keep the wife and son happy. I have a Coolermaster Centurion case I'd be using plus my old HD's. I'd like to build a more quiet PC. Current one sounds like a hoover. What CPU cooler would be good? Thanks for any info.

I'd go with PC-8000/8500 RAM if you have plans to overclock.

Also, you could go with the E8400 instead and just overclock it to 3.16GHz (and beyond).

PSU, a 650W Corsair is probably more ideal as it's single rail and provides cleaner power compared to OCZ.

CPU Cooling, go with the OCZ Vendetta 2 or the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 (I think that's the model). Basically anything that uses heatpipe direct touch and you should be good.

Thanks jdrom17
Recommendations on the ram?

Is the E8400 just as good? I plan on mild OC'ing, but, don't know too much about it yet.

Thanks for the info on the PSU, cheaper too!

id suggest grabbing an E8400 as well.
A simple google search on E8400 vs E8500 will surely change your mind.
You pay 50+ dollars for an increase of 2-3 measly FPS. Not worth it imho.
the E8400 has OCing capabilities with a good HSF (as jdrom17 said: vendetta 2 or the xigmatek one work just fine.) and will be able to get you just as good, if not beter clocks ten the E8500 can.
Save some money! Economy sucks now anyways.

Mushkin Redlines would be your best bet probably. G.SKILL is decent too and is cheaper.

Oh and use Price Canada as well to check prices since Direct Canada isn't always cheaper but then you'd have to order from NCIX to be able to price match and shipping could be higher.

And clocking a E8400 160Mhz (aka to 3.16GHz) is nothing. Even a child could do that

I got the E8500 a month ago for 190 on sale, it's the only reason I didn't get the E8400 was the sale. The only difference is the extra .5 multiplier right?

Yep, and the only place that might make a difference (IMO) would be with a really high OC. It might allow a slightly lower FSB to keep memory within range.

I might drop an extra $10 for the .5 but I certainly wouldn't pay $50.

I couldn't agree more. At the time that's all I paid extra. The E8400 has dropped a lot in price too.
