Smile About to build first PC in 8 years...how's this?

Hi, I'd like some advice about the build I'm planning on putting together.

The PC is for overall usage, ripping DVD's, surfing, office apps, light photoshop use, iTunes, etc. Since I have an Xbox 360 the only gaming I'll be doing on it is Mame and older PC games. (UT2003, C&C Generals, older freeware titles), thus I'd like to try to get away with using onboard video. Probably going to buy from NCIX as I live in Vancouver and can pick up the parts.

Here's what I put together last night (NCIX):

Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H AMD 780G mATX AM2+ PCI-EX SATA RAID Video Sound GLAN 1394 HDMI Motherboard ($105.99)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Dual Core Processor AM2 2.7GHZ 2X512KB 65W 65NM Retail Box ($78.99)

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 3.5IN 500GB SATA2 8.5MS 7200RPM 32MB Cache NCQ Hard Drive OEM ($69.98)

LG GH22NS30 Black DVD+RW 22X8X16 DVD-RW 22X6X16 DL 16X/12X 2MB SATA OEM ($25.98)

G.SKILL F2-6400CL4D-4GBPK PC2-6400 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit ($69.99)

Antec Three Hundred Mini Tower Gaming Case 300 ATX 3X5.25 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB & Audio ($55.99)

Antec Earthwatts 500W Power Supply ATX12V V2.0 Active PFC 80-PLUS 80MM Fan ($49.99)

Vista 64 Bit OEM ($134.21)

Total: $662.05 inc. tax

I wanted to try to come in closer to $600 but forgot that I need to purchase Vista. Anywhere I can cut some corners?

I would also like to keep this machine as quiet as possible, so I'm not likely to overclock unless I can get away with using the stock cooler.

Any comments or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Matt

Did you try pricematching those items to bring you back down to the $600 mark? ($120 for the Vista alone.... :) )

Depending on what you want in a case... you could also probably get the Sonatta III including a 500W PSU for $99.

No, I didn't even realize NCIX does price matching...*slaps forehead*. Just took a look at pricecanada.com and it does look like I can save a bunch, thanks!

Otherwise, any comments on the parts or does it all look pretty good?

Since it's been 8 years you didn't build a computer, I assume you aren't also up to date with the latest trends. AMD is now crap compared to Intel so for a similar price, you can get a Intel C2D E5200 with a good mobo.

^^ Agreed. But he already built it.

I don't think he's already built it, but I'm not sure he'd get a decent intel onboard vid motherboard + CPU for $180.

I was looking at the 5200 + biostar G31 board combo, but that doesn't have the options this board does.

Just noticed that the AMD X2 5200 retail is $73.57 if bundled with the board he's picked.

Not bad, but he'd need a cheap vid card to go with that.

(He's also going to be paying PST, but no shipping as he's local to NCIX)
