Sorry people.. Just trying to help, but I keep forgetting stuff. The user never mentioned video card, so I wasn't too sure..

I know he wants to stay as close to $600 as possible, but imo if he spends just a bit more, he will get a better system..

No need to be sorry... you put together an excellent system just minus the Vid card. I'm sure I could find a decent lower end card to fill that need.

Unfortunately I also just noticed that you didn't have an OS listed.... I was wondering how you managed to get where you were for under $600.

Oh, missed the OS as well... Then, back to the initial list.

I was wondering about something like this NCIX.com - Buy NCIX PC Bundle Deal Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2GB 250GB DVDRW USB Sound Video LAN - Unassembled - NCIXPC-E500 In Canada. with OS + a decent lower end vid card added to it, but I think the components in his original build would be better.

Oh noes.. Ok let's try and cut costs down.. Is it easy to get a MIR back from OCZ, they have some a 4GB memory it for $53 after MIR NCIX.com - Buy OCZ Gold XTC PC2-6400 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-18 DDR2 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit - OCZ2G8004GK In Canada.

That and Steve as you said, the Antec Sonata III w/PSU, which comes with an earthwatts, that would save few bucks.. but not much..

here's what my build would be, for that price limit:

Case: Antec NSK4480 380W Mid Tower ATX Blk/Slv
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: Intel E4600 2.4GHz 800FSB 2M Core2 Duo
Motherboard: Asus P5Q SE LGA775 ATX PCI-E EPU MB
Power Supply: Included with case (380W)
Graphics Card: Asus EAH3650 SilentMagic 512mb DDR2 PCIE
Memory: 2 x 1GB Kingston Value RAM
Hard Drives: 500GB Western Digital SATAII
Optical Drives: LG GH22NS30 22x DVDRW SATA BLK

The board doesn't have included video, but that is easily solved by a very cheap PCI-E card that will do all you need it to, and run silent as well.

Antec has a nice lineup of cases, so I picked one that looks efficient yet doesn't hit the wallet too hard.

The 4600 is a very nice chip, perfect for what you're asking of it. Prior to building my current E8400 rig, i was running a 4600 and I must say it performed spectacularly.

As well, since you're not running anything too demanding, I'm reasonably sure you could get away with the 380W PSU (combined with the EPU 4 engine this motherboard has, you have some potential energy savings).

My personal experience with HDDs are that seagates are really loud, compared to WD drives. So i'd go with a nice 500GB WD drive.

I suggested 2 gigs of RAM, but you could always go with 4GB to be safe (RAM is so cheap nowadays so why not) if you have extra $$ left over.

I'm not sure what the total is, but it should definitely be under budget (i used parts listed off a local site for reference).

Other users, can you find any problems with this build?

Thanks everyone, really appreciate it. I think I'll end up going with that OCZ ram, the Sonata case and doing some price matching. I didn't mention it but I'm coming from a Duron 1.3GHz system with 768mb ram! Anything will pretty much blow my socks off at this point.

I know AMD is lagging behind Intel, but the prices are right and everything should be more than adequate for my needs.

Thanks everyone for their input...I think I'll like it here.

Heh... Duron 1.3.... :) (It's been a long time since I ran a duron.... :) ).

Yeah, you'll see massive performance gains, and in spite of Intel's CPU dominance I personally think the AMD mATX onboard vid motherboards offer better features/price than their Intel brethrens.

Welcome to HWC, and we hope you'll hang around!
