My System Specs

I've had some bad luck in the past with things exploding. What safety measures will you take in case your PSU or PWMs decide to spontaneously erupt into a ball of flame? With a metal case, the damage is relatively contained and most of your other components are salvageable. In a wood case, I could imagine every last component in there going down with the ship if you don't plan for that contingency carefully.

It would take one hell of a hot long burning flame to set this ablaze if it is properly lacquered....it would certainly char the finish but I think the power would be cut off before any fire was able to consume a case like this....

The problem with wood is that it is a heat insulator and is hard to get the heat out of it. The best examples of wood cases I have seen have a lot of fans and usually isolated chambers for the HDs etc. Not a huge problem as long as you are aware and plan for extra cooling and airflow.

The benefits (to me) are excellent sound insulation and elegant appearance. I love anything made of fine wood with any variety of finishes. I am terrible at working with wood, but great with metal. I can appreciate metal finishes too, but it just doesn't have the same craftsmanship and ambience of wood.

Sure, it's been done before, but not often. I assume anyone with a collection of woodworking tools will love an opportunity to use them with such an ambitious goal!

Hey S_G

You know what would be a cool case, and best yet it hasn't been done yet?

I think a granite or marble case. You could probaly find it for 40 dollars a square foot. Maybe less since there is no installation work.Since most facilities have water jet cutter, you could get them to put fancy cuts in it.

I might do this in the future, but not now. Sure its a heavy material but it is incredibly badass.

Sure it might cost you 400 for the material, but you would have a unique case that's never been done. I think the thermal properties are better too.

Theft-proof. You'd need a forklift to move it.

yeah it would like need to be a small form factor cube that way you could move it and it would allow you to build it out of 1X1 marble floor tiles...hmmmm we may be on to something here.

Not a bad idea. it would be quite liftable in that case. But if I was going to build one, I would make it a full case.

if you could get 1 cm granite, I don't think it would be anymore than 50 pounds.

If its 2 cm, it would be crazy heavy.

Toronto Granite Prefabricated Granite Countertops Kitchen Vanit

Not any relation to me, but any of the colors in the first picture would make a kick ass case.

If I was going to build one those, I would use emerald pearl color.

What I would do to simplify the process is gut out a full case for the rails.

Atleast it would be flame proof.

Would love to see how this project turns out in the end. Would definitely be an original idea.

Marble, granite... That would be hard as hell to work with.
