Home Server

Well I decided to up my geek cred a bit and build a server, because really, why not? I'm running a desktop and a HTPC, so it would be nice to centralize my storage anyway.

So far, here's what I'm using:
Thermaltake VF6000BNS Lanbox, as it can hold 4 storage HDD's and 1 for my OS

and then I'm using a Corsair HX520W PSU, overkill, yes, but I had it laying around, plus it's modular so it works.

Now here's the question, what do you guys think would work pretty well for a processor/motherboard combo for this thing?

The thing about a server is it's running 24/7 so power consumption, noise and size are factors.

Keeping this in mind this mobo/cpu combo is good ...

I am using this mobo in my kitchen pc at the moment.

I am also using an earlier version of this mobo, the D201GLY2 as my server.

Multiple systems in one case

I'm liking that board and processor combo, but it only has 4 SATA ports, I plan on using 5 SATA drives, any nice way to overcome that?

Excellent setup for a home server.

I , until not to long ago, had a great home server on a P2 333 with 512Mb ram running SME server (Linux) 24/7. This really goes to show that in a home server it's easy to jump on the overkill wagon.

The parts you listed will be almost dead silent and have a low power consumption. After reading this thread I think it's time to build another home server.

If it's a dead silent system you want, you may need to replace the heatsink on the chipset. It has a 40mm fan and even though I plugged mine into a fan header which has a speed adjustment in the bios, I found it needs to run at a minimum of 80% to cool the chipset.

BTW, the small heat sink at the top is for the cpu, the one under with the fan is for the chipset.

heh, my server is def. an overkill server.. e6600 and an ocz gamexstream 700w PSU. I was orignially going to use it for something else, but seeing as how im in school, and don't want to pay for more PC parts right now, it'll do.

4? I only see 2 sata ports...

There was another, similar board I was looking at with 4, that's where that number came from
