My System Specs

Question Upgrading issues, what vid card, cpu?!

So, I am having upgrading issues, to put it lightly. I donít know how to spend my money, sucks donít it!
Anyways, Iíve budgeted $500 for an upgrade or two, but Iím having issues deciding what would be the best bang for the buck. I need a new video card, and am considering a new CPU.

Current Specs:
  • E6400 @ 3.20 (itís rather old now, Iíve had it since they came out, runs great though)
  • DFI Lanparty DK P45-T2RS
  • G.Skill DDR2-800 (4 Gigs)
  • Sapphire 1950GT (I had two of these in Crossfire, but have since given one away to a friend in need, hence the upgrades Iím considering.)
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 Ė 640gig (x2), plus two more IDE drives (150, 250 Gig)
  • Older Coolermaster CPU Heat sink and it all lives in a Centurion 590.
  • Silverstone Element 500W
  • Acer AL2216W (1680x1050)
After hours or research Iíve decided on upgrading the CPU to an E8500, and I would love to get a single 4870 (HIS, Visiontek, Iíll compare warranties and choose, as they are all within $10 after price matching.)

What would you do? Iím stuck! The E8500 can be price matched very close to the E8400, the extra $20 isnít an issues. Not to mention my chances of getting an E-0 revision, are much greater with the E8500 I think.
Do you think the prices on the 4870ís are going to drop a bit in the next few weeks? I have a feeling they might with the (hopefully) pending release of over clocked versions. Either way the video card has to go. I thought long and hard about saving a bit, and going with a 4850, but you will have to talk me into it again.
Oh, and primary function of this PC is gaming/media. I play lots of tf2, and have recently finished Crysis, Bioshock, COD4 etc. I canít wait to get a new card and go back and play Crysis properly! lol
Anyways, thanks in advance, oh and my purchases will be made through NCIX, and I'm hoping to buy in the next two weeks, hopefully Wednesday's sale will be kind.

-Andy (this is my 1st post, but I've been reading for a while, and check up every day, so I will be back.)

E8500 and a 4870 then. You can xfire/psu upgrade later for another boost.

any budget issues....reasonable budget issues. Only thinking the 4870X2 has seen some serious price drops it will probably be sitting at $500 soon I saw it at $529.99 already. Anyway if you pick up a single X2 for around $500 and then you will have room to grow and add another in the future instead of 2 4870's. But for pure price to performance dual 4850's would likely suit your solution quite nice and for only about 320 bucks. Mind you we should see the 4850x2 drop soon assuming it's not like the enigma that was the 3850X2.

Yah, I think the x2 will still be out of my budget, not to mention probably more card than I need for the next year or two. So it would seem that the E8500, and 4870, is the right choice at this moment. I guess I will just wait a week or so and see what happens price wise. I would love to be able to knock another $40 or so off the price. Thanks for the help everyone!

The E8500 can be matched to $185 at MDG right now (using shopbot.ca).

He would be severely cpu bound with an X2 and his current processor. He would also need another power supply to run an X2.

Yeah the 4870X2 is severely limited by the CPU below 4Ghz I as have experienced but I find comfort in knowing its all I need and some for my current rig and next.....ahhh i7 and the e8500 can easily hit 4.0Ghz
