My System Specs

Default Looking for a good GigE switch

As title says, I'm looking for a GigE switch with at least 16 ports for my home lab. Managed would be nice but not required. Max is 250$. Any suggestions?

I just had this conversation with my fellow mods last week. Netgear was the brand most touted. This one should fit the bill: Netgear Prosafe GS116NA 16 Port Gigabit Desktop Network Switch 10/100/1000

I would more lean towards the GS116E-100NAS or the GS716T-200NAS so you get some management support. The GS716 is a "smart" switch meaning it has a web GUI, but it looks like it has a fan in the chassis which could be noisy. I'm not quite sure what the GS116 comes with though, but it does have VLAN support.

I personally use the GS108T-200NAS, you could always just by 2 of those since they go for about $80.

Do you need a managed switch or no? I had a GS108T V2 as well and like it well enough.

Get an HP procurve 1800 or an 1810. Gigabit, fanless, lifetime warranty, and supports everything you need.

congrats i have the POE version of that switch. It works great. But just be aware that this is a web managed switched and not a full blown layer 2 managed switch. so some of the options may be limiting. (ie: there is most likely no stacking)

Yea, but the Cisco layer 2/3 switches with POE are $3,000.
Ouch sucks.
