win7/XP file sharing: stopped working on new router

Since I've upgraded to Rogers new Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway I'm not able to see an XP based laptop thru my Win7 pc. I've tried a few things but neither one can see the other now. Any ideas? I'm on steam chat if that's easier.

edit: It's in the workgroup. both need to be in WORKGROUP by default. mods you can delete this or leave it if it helps other.

Are you saying that you solved this? I have always had a Bitch of a time trying to connect between win7 and xp . but I am thinking that like you said they need the same workgroup name ( I think that it is call that) for it to work but even then sometimes it can be finicky.

In my experience WinXP and Win7 will just suddenly stop sharing with each other. A reboot of both machines are required, then without changing anything it starts to work again.

Then, it'll repeat. I've never figured out the reason.

Let's divide the issue. Were you able to share folders during your old wireless router? Then, after router swap, you can't share them? Then most likely if you use WiFi, the router (I'd say firewall in the router) is causing the issue.

If so, try wired connection between the 2PCs via the router.
If it works, then the router blocks WiFi connection from accessing to other device on the LAN.

If you used WPS to setup wifi connection, maybe this is the reason. Because WPS is not a secure method to set up a wireless connection because anyone can connect to the wireless network during the setup phase, however, just giving access only to the Internet to the device prevents vulnerabilities or security issues within the local network.

That's been my experience as well, although a reboot doesn't always resolve the issue. Fortunately I'm now running Win7 on all but one of my household PCs and the XP laptop doesn't need to share files with the rest of the network.
