in search of a new router
So i am looking at replacemy my antiquated (in terms of wireless) router with a new model. However i can't decide between these 2.
1. Engenius 9855G
2. Dlink DIR-815/825
Any pointers ?
I have the Dlink DIR-825 and it's a great router. A few months back I have tested out several routers in a similar price range and the DIR-825 was one of the fastest in terms of sustained speeds on wireless N.
The only one faster was Apple Airport Extreme (I got sustained 17MB/s on it on 5GHz band), but I ultimately picked the Dlink because of its dual wifi chips, which result in better overall performance and speed if you share your wireless connection with multiple users and devices.
With the Dlink I have some of the devices use the 2.4GHz band, while others use 5GHz band - the result is that both can be maxed out simultaneously, something that does not happen with routers that are dual-mode, but not dual-chip. I get sustained 7MB/s on the 2.4GHz band and 13MB/s on the 5GHz. The speeds will of course vary depending on where you install it and where in your house you use it from. The way this works is that you actually get two distinct SSIDs for 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Network-wise, they are bridged, so all machines can talk to each other just fine. The result is that I can, for example, download a large file or stream a video from my local library on one SSID, while the other is being used for online gaming and not affected by the saturated wifi link.
Well i ended up with a linksys E2500 and after the firmware update it's working great. I get reception throughout the house despite the router being in the basement. It's also dual band but it's kind of a waste as i don't have any 5ghz equipment.
