My System Specs

Default linksys WRT54G2

Hey guys quick question. My sister just got a new printer with a RJ-45 on it, she use a WRT54G2. She want me to make the printer usable on the network over the wi-fi without the computer open. So to plug the printer directly into the router using the RJ-45. Is this router capable of doing this or she will need a rj-45 print server? Thx for reply.

It should work just fine without a print server. Print servers are to plug USB printers into the routers. Any router should work with a printer with a RJ45 jack.

Yup, should work. Find the IP address, and add the printer using the "Network" printer option in Windows.

I've always been unable to reach my old HP Laserjet 4plus on XP that is networked using the Network option.
Found I needed to use: Local printer attached to this computer -> Create a new port - Standard TCP/IP port.
Another dialog box comes up titled "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard" which indicates "You use this wizard to add a port for a network printer" - certainly goooooooooooooooooofy! ... but it IS Windows.

It is XP. W7 works fine for adding a networked printer. I have 4 of them as such at home using a dedicated Shuttle Windows 7 printer server.

Wierd. Can't get the printer to work on the router...the printer ask for the IP, gateway and another setting I forget. I try with mine tonight ( brand new Samsung 3175N ) to see f can get it to work here. If you have any idea why the printer would not appear on the network let me know;)

You should be able to add the printer via IP address. You can get the printer IP from the router if the printer doesn't tell you.
