Default Need help finding a suitable router
The fine gentlemen of IRC are failing me today! My friend needs a router, and I really lack knowledge on what's good and what isn't nowadays. Criteria is simple. Wired or wireless, cheaper the better, and can be found in stock at the Canada Computers Brampton store. If there's a REALLY good deal somewhere online, I'll get him to consider it, but Canada Computers is the first option right now.

Meh, he's a normal gamer (WoW...). Downlaods big things from time to time. I just didn't want to tell him to pick something up that has known problems.

I like Dlinks myself. I've installed one for my home and others for family and no problems.

Plain routers are pretty much a commodity, DLink, Netgear, Linksys, Belkin, etc., all have their fans and detractors, probably easiest to just get another model of the brand he's using so that the UI is mostly familiar and make sure the store have a good no hassle return policy.

Does he use wireless? Does he have a wireless console and/or older wireless G device that connects? If so, make sure he understands that the great majority of wireless N routers will not provide wireless N speeds when any other device is connecting at wireless G (or worse... ;) ) speeds.

If he's using wireless, how far away are his connections? Does he do a lot of downloading? How many PC's / Devices is he going to be connecting?

I've been using a cheap D-Link DIR-615 for 2 years now with 4 ethernet devices and 3 wireless devices connected to it 24/7 and haven't had to reset it a single time since I bought it. That said... I don't do torrents so it's not running 24/7 bandwidth, but I have done several extended length DL sessions (Restoring DRM Protected media, and a couple of steam reloads) without a hitch.

My WRT54G doesn't like to hand out IPs. It does ok with 1-2 devices but after that, it totally cacks and I gotta reboot it. So I bought an Asus 520GU and threw Tomato on it. For some reason my laptop hated that router. Everything else worked alright but not my lappy. So I ended up going back to my WRT54G lol. Not looking forward to finding a new router when it dies. :(

anything from linksys, dlink, netgear, asus, buffalo would do him fine.
