Default 100m Cat 6, Where Can I get It

Basically it says it all in the title, i need at least 100m of Cat 6 due to stringing internet from my neighbors over to my place (this is basically the only way i can get half decent internet, even if it is only wireless, its better than my Satellite lol). Now cause this is going outdoors do I need anything special where the cable is concerned?

As well just to cover my bases what exactly would i need if I need more than 100m, and where would i be able to get that?

Im located in the Frasier Valley, in Mission, close to Vancouver, and would prefer a local dealer if possible, but I am willing to use online sources if it is cost effective.

Thanks for the help guys!

I would be buying cat5e - there is unlikely a need for cat6. Scroogle can answer all your questions about which cable to choose for your application. Consider sunlight, water, and foot traffic in your decision.

Networking has become popular enough that just about any electrician supply store will sell you the cable. Only some of them will sell it in less than thousand foot boxes. Talk to some electricians; they often have box ends left over after a job and may be willing to give it to you or sell it cheep.

Keep in mind that one hundred meters is the maximum length for single run. Normal wire is not rated for outside use. It will last for years but you really have no idea when it will fail or what symptoms you will get when it starts to go. Ideally it should be buried in a PVC conduit but that's really going to be expensive.

Also keep in mind that many building codes have rules against 'stringing wire' from one house to another. Nosy neighbours, HOAs, or the authorities might turn you in and a visit from the fire marshal could cost you quite a bit. I don't care what you do; I'm just sayin'.

Why is it that your neighbor has an isp but you can't get one? I find this odd. There must be cable or dsl at least.

That's 1000 feet ZZLEE.... I think you'll run into some big problems with the outdoors with your cable. I would get some sort of wrap (rubber sleeve?) to put over it that doesn't cost too much.

Due to the length involved I think I would try wireless bridging with directional high gain antennas first. You only need wireless "B" unless you plan on networking with your neighbor (IE: actually sharing things with him/her)

Is B better than N? I haven't heard of it used many times. I would suggest Wireless N, it allows for a pretty far range.

If you go outdoor, you need outdoor type reinforced cable which is pricey. Perhaps you can get wireless going with extra antennas.
