My System Specs

Default Messaging over home network

Hey I was wondering if anyone out there knows of an app that would allow me to have an instant message service running between my machines on my home network.

I do not want it to be going out to the internet. I know I could just get some gmail addresses and use google talk or something like that but I want something that is internal only. The simpler it is the better. Basically an IM over LAN or something like that.

I would prefer something that is free/open source if possible but other choices would be considered.

Way back in the day I played around with Openfire (server) + Spark (client). Basically just using the Jabber/XMPP protocol. Works fine and you can confine it to your LAN or even open it to the Internet too.

Whole bunch of servers here: XMPP Software: Servers
And there's just as many clients too: XMPP Software: Clients

I know an option, don't know if tit will work 100% but its worth looking into. One of them is running your own irc server/channel/room locally.

Learn Java / C / C# / etc... and make it yourself! Ok, so I'm a nerd and that's what I would do....I'd probably just setup a local IRC server.

I had to do that for one of my networking classes without real prior knowledge in, dealing with sockets. It was a big pain in the ass for us to figure out even though we had programming knowledge so yeah, stay with my idea of a local irc server if you want to keep your hair and sanity

An IRCd would work, however it is a little involved for just home use. Also, unless you have services installed and setup as well, there is no way to leave a message for other people. They would have to both be connected at the same time.

.. my memory is fuzzy, memoserv is part of the services package you choose to install right? (Anope, etc)

Question: Does yelling down/up the stairs no longer work?

One way or 2 way messaging? You could always just send an administrative alert to the workgroup for one way.

I used to use netsend.
Must be enabled as of XP SP2 as SP2 sets it to disabled.
