Help me choose a new router please!

Hi there everyone currently i am looking for a new dual bandwith wireless router to change my crappy Netgear wireless router to a more efficient one.

I would like one that its capable of downloading high volume of files , HD videos, playing online games and using my internet radio that i just bought while using my laptop and desktop computer running at the same whitout loosing my connection in both wireless and cable mode if you can underatsnd.

My current budget for a new router is around 100$ more or less.

Any advice would be appriciated.

boiled down i'm guessing you want a wifi-router that can take a beating from Bit torrent and not have to be restarted regularly because it keeps crapping the bed.

Sadly most wifi-routers fall into said category, unless some of the folks here have had good luck with a particular make/model. I would hazard to guess that a wifi-router with VPN capability would be a bit more robust; but eclipses your budget. I would also guess that you are targeting for a wireless G router looking at what you want to spend.

Buffalo one that's on sale at NCIX. Believe it's the WHR-HP-G54. Load that up with DD-WRT firmware than voila! Many people out there recommend the Buffalo due to the built in amplifier and the fact that it supports DD-WRT.

It's a Belkin F5D 8236-4 v3 Wireless N router.

Well, that's what I've got. Bought it kind of at random, because it looks alright and fits my desk quite well. No flashing lights either. There are only two computers utilizing it at the moment, and I personally refuse to use wifi if there is any other option open at all. . . So, one is hardwired (mine), and the roommate is using the wifi portion.

Now, the problem is, when my roommate uses something like utorrent or anything, whether it's running about 15KB/s through it or the full bandwidth for this connection (15-20mb/s), I lose almost all connectivity. I get slowed down to a near-dialup crawl.

I'm considering trying to track down an older linksys model... I always liked them more anyway. Any ideas on what I can do with this thing?

(Ummm....to avoid a major hijacking of this thread.....dont buy a belkin router!)

Thanks for your replies guys, so if i understant well currently there is no wifi router model on the market that it will never loose its connection or handle high bandwith data transfer whitout loosing speed.

Crap! and i thought that netgear was crap.

Beside Linksys there are really no alternative?

I might add that i live in a appartement block so i imagine that its not easy whit the Wifi connection when you have other people who use wifi internet in their appartement.

I've got the linksys wrt600N and I must say, I love it. I download at 1.7mb/s on torrents, while my brother games and there is no problems at all. I've got 4 computers connected to it at all times, and it handles them like a charm. The only problem is that I do not think it is sold anywhere anymore.

Not fond of N routers. I'll take the Buffalo and put DD-WRT on it. It's a tried and true product. Go over to DD-WRT's site and most of them will probably recommend the Buffalo router now that they can be sold in North America again.
