Default Mapping network drives.

I remember when this used to be easy....

So I'm trying to map network drives between two computers, we'll call them HTPC and Main PC. HTPC is running Vista and the Main PC running Windows 7. From the Main PC I can see the HTPC but when I click on it to expand it Windows asks me for a network password. Where do I find what the netwok password is?

From the HTPC, I can see that I've mapped the drive from the Main PC but it shows as empty and tells me I don't have permission to access the drive. AFAIK I've shared the drive and left all permissions wide open.

I've been trying to get these drives mapped all afternoon and am about to pull my hair out!

That means you have "Password Protected Sharing" checked off in the Network and Sharing Center. Just go in there and disable it.

Password protected sharing was only enabled on the HTPC. Now I get a different kind of 'You do not have permission to access....' message. I can map a folder called Public which contains folders like 'public documents', 'public videos', etc. but those folders are empty and I'm not sure where they are located. They're not on the drives I'm trying to share anyway.

Mapping a network drive and sharing are 2 different aspects. You haven't mapped a drive yet, but you have enabled the share "Public" folders on both computers (My Computer, look on the left you will see the Public Folder).

Now if you wish to access the whole drive you need to share it. Right-click C:, then click Share - Advanced sharing. Enable Share this folder. Do this on both computers. Then you will be able to map the whole drive.

I see the 'Public' folders to the left but I don't physically know where they are, not that it matters anyway I don't want to use them.

Enable Sharing on the drives is the first thing I did. They are set to share and permissions are for allow everyone (full control and Read and Change). I just checked the settings again and they are still all set where they should be.

If you click on Network on the Start menu, do you see both computers and the router? If so, you should be able to use the Map network drive wizard in My Computer.

Also, the Public Folders are part under the User folder.

Here's a ss of my setup. In order from top left: Network, My Computer, 1Folding is a shared folder, Volume1 is my DNS-323 Server.

When I share, I do not add any permissions, I let Windows handle that.

I see everything in under Network. Using the Wizard tells me the same thing... Access denied. I can map the drive so it shows as a drive in explorer, I just can't access it.
