Default Laptop

Hey guys, need help choosing a new laptop mainly for school.
NCIX.com - Canada's Premier Computer Store - Great Technology, Service and Selection.

Sony VAIO CR-Series Notebook PC featuring Windows Vista Home Premium - 14.1-inch LCD - Sangria Red - VGNCR520DR;Computer Systems;Notebooks;Computers;London Drugs

I think i might have narrowed it down to those 2... I need it this week, so i can't order much. I don't know whether i would need the video card or not. :( I am going to school, so cash is limited, so im going back and forth

Sony just recalled a bunch of TZ Vaio laptops.

The Asus looks alright. Haven't really stayed up on laptops lately. Already got two, but I do have to buy one for my wife this coming spring.

Good luck.

They both seem quite expensive considering their screens are only 14 inches, do you really want to spend that much on a laptop if it is just for school? I just don't feel that the laptops you listed have anything that special to be priced so high... like the Sony VAIO only has a 14 inch screen, 5400 rpm HD, integrated graphics... and the Asus one would only be worth it (still feel that it is overpriced) if you intend on gaming on it... but it wouldn't be very good for games (expecially with a 14inch screen).

I would get something like this one for student use.
WARM??Compaq Presario Notebook PC $364.97 with coupons

Oh and I don't think that the laptop being sold is a recalled one. You can always check but I wouldn't worry too much about that. (but u should check before buying)

I want a 14" screen. I like smaller laptops. I PM'ed the asus to 1200 so, im leaning towards that. I want a laptop that i will have for a while. That compaq barely cuts it now, let alone for a few years. Plus Im not an AMD fan. :P

Makes Sense, I just meant gaming on a 14'' screen wouldn't be that good, and if your not going to game then there is no need for a laptop with that video card.

I agree it isn't that good of a laptop, but if your a poor student... (I'm assuming your not that poor for a student then). I just thought you would want to consider cheap laptops, but you could even get something like this
Best Buy Canada Web Store: Computers: Laptops: Gateway 14.1" Laptop featuring Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 2.0GHz (T-6842)
And there are a lot of good dell laptops for less.

The Graphic card in the one that you want is a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650... thats AMD. Haha but I guess you mean just the AMD processors... ya they do kind of suck.

You get much better bang for buck with the Asus. It's a nice machine imo. One thing to be aware of is battery life on Asus laptops always falls short compared to other brands. Not sure why but it is a common complaint. Sony is nice but like anything they produce... it is overpriced.

In the 14" range you are looking at business notebooks so that really limits your choices since you are in a hurry. But as long as you don't need to rely on battery life for hours the Asus will do you nicely :)

I was consider that ASUS one for school but I believe it only gets like 2h runtime on battery which IMO wasn't long enough. That wouldn't get me through a 3h class...

So I went with the Dell XPS m1330. Had to sacrifice the Centrino 2 CPU and the dedicated graphics (didn't want NVIDIA's failure graphics) but I got a 9 cell battery which seems to give me about 5 hours.
