My System Specs

Default School Laptop - $500

My wife is going back to university as a mature student. Her old laptop is about 10 years old, and even with a few upgrades like Windows 10 and a hybrid drive, still feels sluggish and slow. Time for a new one.

Our budget is about $500, and our requirements are that it be good for university work. You know, document creation, project work, etc. So mainly Microsoft Office stuff. Therefore it doesn't have to be a powerhouse in the compute department. Ideally it should be comfortable to type on, and have a relatively decent trackpad. Build quality should be good enough for it to last at least 4 years (i.e. enough to get her through her program).

Any recommendations? We have a Memory Express here that I could purchase from.

Are you open to buy a refurbished or office resale laptop? Could be a good fit for your needs. They will be on the heavier side, but at a good price.

That's what I was going to suggest.

A second (or third) gen i5/7 paired up with an SSD would probably fit the bill. Any new sub $500 laptop would probably need an SSD to make it "pop" anyways.

edit: I bought an e6420 through newegg.ca which gave me a reasonable shipping price along with the comfort level that came with buying through the newegg marketplace.

I would recommend only the Lenovo Thinkpad line. It's got to be sturdy, hinges must not fail - every single customer of mine that chose either was very pleased.

And yes, refurbs are a possibility. Definitely drop a SSD though in place of the HDD for the sake of a better power consumption and data safety.
Example: https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/lenovo-.../6000196571794 Already with a SSD!

A member here just recommended to me a website with nothing but refurbished business laptops. Lots of 3-5 year old Lenovo thinkpads on there for $400 or less. Some of them come with 128GB SSD's. They sound perfect.

Like this one: https://ca.refurb.io/collections/lap...600x900-laptop

Has an i7, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. Perfect!!! There are a few with i5's, 4GB of RAM and an SSD for $250, too, if we're feeling particularly cheap.

8GB is probably the minimum you'd want, but you should be able to find that on kijiji/craigslist for $30 - $40 if the model you choose only has 4GB.

Any bloatware installed on it? Or was it a clean windows install?

EDIT: Just heard back that a laptop bought from here did NOT come with bloatware installed, but rather a clean install of Windows. This pretty much seals the deal for me. I'll be searching for an appropriate laptop from refurb.io when the times comes.
