Default Operation of Smart phones solely via WiFi? (And other probably cell-newb questions)

Weird question.....

Do android smart phones without sim cards still retain WiFi functionality for things like connecting to the store?

Here's the scenario....

I'm looking for a MCE remote or something similar and really like the functionality of Unified Remote ( Unified Remote ) but using my Nexus7 as a remote is a bit unwieldy. If I were to find an older touch screen smart phone with WiFi abilities... would I be able to use the WiFi to connect to the google store to install UR without even bothering with a sim card?

Would it work but have to be rooted?

Any ideas?

Cool!!!! So now it's just a matter of finding a sub $100 smartphone..... ;)

Again you'll have to excuse my ignorance when it comes to cell phones..... do updates to the OS come solely from the cell provider, or do they also come from the manufacturer? Would a Samsung phone get Samsung updates over wifi, or would a company like bell have complete control over what updates were done? (I'm assuming that kind of unconnected functionality / updates is what rooting is all about? ).

Any suggestions from our member on older hardware which might be for sale these days that would fit the bill as a wifi connected remote / email checker / light browser?

I only know Samsung, but in my experience you'll get OTA updates from the carrier. Without a SIM card, you're limited to getting it through Kies on your computer.

Even better... so some manufacturers do actually offer some kind of support not tied to carriers. Just a matter of doing some research on a particular brand / model.

Am I correct in assuming that pretty much any 4.X version of android is going to be supported by most apps?

Quick search locally showed me this..... HTC 1v - Moncton Phones, PDAs, iPods For Sale - Kijiji Moncton Canada. which looks interesting. Still have quite a bit of research to do though....

You could even get a $3 a month SKYPE account and make phone calls (as long as you have a WIFI signal).

Enjoy your new-to-you SGSII...

And if something goes really wrong with CM, JD can help, just like JakeHT. They both did when I rooted the phone.

Heh... yeah that was quick. :)

Of course now I'll have to beat the young lad off with a stick.... he's getting tired of his BB curve..... :)

I suppose some folks might think it's an expensive MCE remote, but it's less expensive than a touchscreen harmony by a couple of factors. Now if only I could figure out why the onkyo app doesn't want to work with my amp............. ;)
