Buddy wants a $500 laptop for light graphics design..
A buddy is looking for a laptop for some simple graphic design. Wants atleast 6gb ram and a decent harddrive. Must be in the $500 range after taxes. Not much of a budget but I thought I'd ask to see what you folks could suggest.
Best I found was this refurbished Asus:
Buy the ASUS U57A 15.6 Core i5 750GB HDD Laptop at TigerDirect.ca
By light graphics are we talking about photoshop?
Because I will be honest with you, barely anything will do that's 500$ or less. He needs to go up in his budget to 700$.
I was lucky enough to buy an ASUS Vivobook for 500$(that's distributor price) but it only has 4 GB of RAM and 500 GB of HDD space, but packs a Core i3 with Intel HD 4000 series.
Unless you can find furnished ones there's no way it's going to happen.
With that budget an i5 (likely a refurb) is about as good as its going to get. I am not sure what programs he uses for graphic design, but you could look into if it can take advantage of AMD APU (GPGPU). If it can than an AMD A8 or better may be able to be found in the budget and give better performance. If the programs he uses doesn't work with GPGPU, then an i5 is the way to go. You may be able to get a newer i5 3xxx around the same price, but you may be waiting a while if you want a deal (especially if you want to find an ASUS).
Bestbuy.ca has a recert lenovo with the same specs, but a i5 3210 for $380, but its currently out of stock.
