Arrow Need tablet info!

I'm wanting to give 2 of my sons a tablet this year or in the next.

It will mostly get used in the car, something to distract them from the "conversations" they have (which consists of "yes" and "no" endlessly.)

Pricepoint is an issue, obviously, I'm looking for best bang for your buck. Wireless performance is important. It's got to be able to play crap like Angry Birds and other menial games. Streaming a movie via wifi will be a requirement.

It won't hold any movies on the device so storage shouldn't be much of an issue. I *think* everything will fit in 8GB of space as there won't be much on them, right?

Definitely looking for a lot of opinions and experience here...

Really can't go wrong with a prime or tab.

Pretty much any tablet you buy will be able to stream a movie via wifi and the resolution you can stream will largely be decided by your connection.

Do you want to be able to hook it up to your cell phone plan?

What size do you want?

What is your budget?

I would want the tablets to be identical and the movies would be converted to that tablet's native resolution already.

The tablets will run off either the home connection or the "carputer". The carputer will have 2 wireless networks, one for uplinking, and the other for feeding the wifi in the vehicle. If I need access to my cellphone plan I'll tether my phone to the carputer and the tablet will get internet via that. Also, Shaw offers many wifi connection points here in the GVR, so once the MAC address of the uplinking wifi card is entered in it will automatically just get internet access as I pass or are near them.

Size doesn't matter too much, 7 or 10 inch would do fine.

Budget would be up to 300 for each tablet, but cheaper would be better and then put into (hopefully) indestructible casings for them

New or used is fine also...

What about the Nexus 7? Pretty sure they start at $199 for the 16GB WiFi version, and you can get cases for it online if needed

I'm definitely looking at the Nexus, tab and asus tablets.

I'm kinda wondering if the Acer Iconia's are worth it or if there are other hidden gems out there.

Samsung - Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with 8GB Memory - White is on for $179 on black friday.....

Also: ASUS Transformer 10.1" 16GB Android Tablet refurb for $230

Any complaints about those models?

How about models / revisions to avoid?

Don't bother with the nexus7. It's a good tablet but the screen is really to small to do anything with and if kids will be using it a larger screen will be much more welcoming for little fingers.

hmmm, interesting point.

I wonder would a 10 inch tablet be too unwieldy for a 2.5 year old?

My almost 2 year old can't handle my 10" HP Touchpad, although my 3.5 year old is fine. I do find it uncomfortable reading in bed, and a 10" is too big to tuck into your wife's purse. My wife brings her 7" Kobo Vox with her everywhere rather than the Touchpad. (Avoid the Kobo's btw, good reader, crappy for everything else.)

Edit: Oh, and get at least 16GB of memory and load 8-10 movies right on the tablet.

Other then the nexus 7, I dont think I have any other suggestions at this point. 7 inches is plenty of real estate to watch a movie and do things on. Though I'm curious how you plan on setting up this "carputer" with a steaming movie solution.
