Custom rom should come in a zip file. Make sure anything you have on the phone which could be important is backed up then in twrp format /cache and /data which will essentially wipe the phone. Then install the custom rom from within twrp and should be good to go.

After you have a custom rom installed check to see if there is a possible kernel to install as well to help even further with things like performance and battery life.

Sounds good. As there is basically nothing in the phone now I think I'll just go ahead and see what happens.

Ok, it's been updated with Liquid Jelly Bean. So far so good. Had to download and install Gapps though as that wouldn't load but everything is running so much better. Screen flickering is gone and its very smooth right now. It also remembered all my settings even after wipe so either I did something wrong or it's supposed to do that haha. Just have to make a test phone call to ensure that works.

Thanks for all your help. Now the hard part is finding good programs for what I need.
