Default WD hdd from Gateway notebook spin-down

The wd hdd in my gateway nv5398u spins down when inactivity, so I plugged it into my workstation, and the same thing happens. In file explorer I can browse to the first layer of directories no problem, but when I go to the second layer it takes 2-3 seconds before it responds and it spins up again. Is there a way to disable this bug by a firmware tool or update? I'm sure it's not a bios or OS configuration problem.
