Default Android is watching you

Wow. Just wow.

Excerpt from the article.

If you have any decently modern Android phone, everything you do is being recorded by hidden software lurking inside. It even circumvents web encryption and grabs everything—including your passwords and Google queries. Worse: it's the handset manufacturers and the carriers who—in the name of "making your user experience better"—install this software without any way for you to opt-out. This video, recorded by 25-year-old Android developer Trevor Eckhart, shows how it works. This is bad. Really bad.

Brutal.

I agree that folks should not have to use a custom rom, but that is exactly what should be done in the meantime.

that's what it seems like, custom roms are a must if this continues.

People, it is Google that makes this OS. Google, the same company that keeps a record of EVERYTHING they can store on their servers that passes through them for 7 years. I find no surprise here, I ask this "what the hell did you expect from a company that makes it quite public it wants to collect every single bit of information online."

Let's get this clear. The headline should read: 'Network carriers and manufacturers use Android, RIM and Symbian to run Carrier IQ software'

Why not bash Blackberry or other companies? They have it as well. This is simply taking something extremely popular and trying to make it look like shit.

Shortly after Eckhart published his research, the legal team at CarrierIQ paid him a visit in the form of a PDF take down notice. The request was for Eckhart to take down all of the content that was infringing on copyrights and made false allegations about their product. As if that wasn’t enough, CarrierIQ also asked that turn over contact information for everyone who had gotten information from him and replace the content on his website with a statement provided for him by CarrierIQ.
The CarrierIQ plot thickens: Researcher receives a C&D and Verizon distances itself

Using a custom rom so it probably doesn't affect me, but if I wasn't, I probably wouldn't care..

All carriers have access to every single one of your text messages, phone calls, etc... and that doesn't seem to bother anyone.. but now that android is collecting usage info it's a big deal? And what about facebook?

It's not like some guy is spying on you through your phone camera

I don't mind the data collection. As long as I see the benefits of it.

Like if I would crash my car in a lake, I would be expecting an ambulance shortly after.
Thanks, Big Brother.
